What's the proper Linux kernel port for a Pentium IV?

Okay, my home computer is currently running off a Pentium III processor, and the ‘mainstream’ x86 Linux kernel is all I have experience with. However, I’m thinking of finally upgrading to a PIV (plus whatever hardware needs to get replaced). I’ve looked on the net, and I can’t find a straight answer to what seems to be a very basic question: will my present kernel work properly, or do I need to use the IA64 port for my system to work at all?

I know for certain there’s got to be another doper who knows this. Thanx in advance for taking the time to answer.

Pentium 4 processors are not IA64 - so yes, your current kernel compiled for P3 or other x86 models will work on your new machine.

Ofcouse you might need to recompile it for any new hardware added - and at the same time you can select the P4 as target cpu (won’t matter much).

Neat. Thanks again
