What's the story with 1080p

My understanding is that no one is currently broadcasting in 1080p, and you can only see a difference from 720p on DVDs. Considering the significant price difference, it doesn’t seem worth the added expense.

Is this generally true? Will is change in the near future? If I buy a good 720p TV now, will I regret it in a year or two?

Even though no one is currently broadcasting in 1080p, quite a few of the networks are using 1080i, which is a step above 720p.

I understand that the new HD DVD and BluRay will offer 1080p capability.

This article gives a lot of good information about the various HD formats and what they mean.
