What's the worst thing about winter?

In my earlier post, I said that cold and less daylight were the two worst things about Winter, but I was under the impression that we were counting cold and snow as the same thing (dumb), so I’d like to change my answer and say it’s a three-way tie between darkness, coldness, and snow. Unless wind is an item apart from cold as well, in which case it’s a four-way tie between darkness, cold, snow, and wind. Our chief weapon is fear. Fear and surprise. Our two chief weapons…

Fuck Winter up the ass with a rusty chainsaw dipped in the blood of pigs who had a curse put on them by an evil witchdoctor, who himself had a curse put on him by an even eviler witchdoctor.

I’m so scared of fire that I cannot sleep with the heat on in my apartment. Getting out from under the blankets, seeing ice on the windows and seeing my breath while drinking my morning tea are bad.

I hate winter. I hate the way the cold makes my hands and feet turn white and numb. I’ve got Raynaud’s which means my hands and feet are extremely sensitive to cold. It also tends to hurt like hell, which is why I hate having to go into the freezer and why I always wrap several napkins around a cold drink. It sucks.

Driving is the worst. My hands always go numb while driving, doesn’t matter if I’ve got the heat blasting or I’m wearing mittens or gloves, my fingers will be totally numb and white by the time I get home. I hate driving with mittens but I have to lately. My hands are just constantly cold and always falling asleep. Ugh.

The worst thing is that there’s really not much that I can do about this other than keep warm. My hands and feet are in a perma state of reddish-blue and I wear gloves while typing from time to time.

I hate winter.

What pisses me off most about winter is that it can be 40 below here in Minnesota and nobody gives a shit. You don’t see that on the news! Granted, it may get a brief mention in Al Roker’s always brilliant weather cast. But it gets to be 40 below in the northeast and everybody’s dying and it’s on the news at the top of every goddamn newscast. Then it gets down to, say, 34 one night in Florida and only up to 55 during the day and everyone has a conniption and nobody goes to Disney World (This I have witnessed, as one of the few people at Disney World on such a day). If it gets up to 55 here in January, everybody’s running around in shorts and proclaiming that spring has come early, for the love of God! God forbid it should snow half an inch in Texas or something absurd like that. Everything’s closed, people are dying, there’s a general state of chaos, and once again it’s all over the goddamn news. We don’t even plow snow here unless we get probably four inches. I’m not saying everybody should feel sorry for us. I don’t feel sorry for myself. Just don’t expect me to feel sorry for others in return!
Other than that, I really don’t mind winter. Snow’s okay, I don’t mind cold all that much. Wind pisses me off, but that’s a year 'round complaint.

My heart goes out to all the dopers who are stuck in places that get so bitching cold that they have to deal with things that us sunny SoCal’s never thought of. Car freezing? Indeed…
What’s worse to think about is all of you who have no transportation of your own and have to freakin’ WALK everywhere. I don’t get how y’all do that. It boggles my fragile little mind.

With that said…I think the worst thing about winter is being a rain lover in a place where you spend your entire three months waiting for it and it rarely comes. There’s something wrong to me on a very basic instinctual level about an 80 degree day in January. Really.

Were I to win the lottery (yeah! Coooomeoooon karma!! ) I know that one of my VACATION houses would be waaaaaay up north or something. I would like to experience some weather on my terms. If I weren’t under any obligation to go anywhere, and I could do what I wanted…have a fire…read a book…watch the docu channels until I ran out of stuff to know…play in the snow…you name it.

But the stories of 20 below and you people being forced to deal with it make me want to cry. Warm fuzzy thoughts of cocoa and a big payout to all you that just have to hang in there. It’ll be spring soon, little lambs!!

What Cuauhtemoc said.

And having to wear a sweater in the evening, sometimes.

I hate having to commute by car through a winter wonderland. I just can’t wait to see my old friends…like “Mr. Old-Man-In-A-Hat” who shouldn’t still be driving and “Mrs. 70s Station Wagon with Bald Tires” who can’t manage to go shopping before the storm hits and “Joey The Camero” whose car slides sideways better than his ass does at a dance club. And they’re always there to meet me with a kind word and a gesture of support.

And while I’m no terrorist, I’ve often wondered whether a Lawes rocket could have prevented that Kind Plow-truck Driver from placing a 3’x5’x10’ wall of solid ice in my driveway apron.

The worst thing are the comments made by the people in the city to which I have just moved. I move, voluntarily, from Los Angeles to Toronto in mid-December, and I am tiring of people asking me if I
m ready to move back/tired of the cold/am generally insane. Well, to be fair, they ask if I’m insane for reasons other than the move, but the moving bit factors into it. Yes, it is lovely in Los Angeles this time of year; I am well aware of that, seeing how I lived there for 13 years. No, I don’t mind the cold, or at least no more than does the average Toronto-ite. Torontonian. Whatever. Yes, I am aware how warm it is in LA (which most of the people I speak to about this are not; they all think it’s over 100f there). Yes, the beach is nice this time of year. Yes, I did think it would be this cold. Please stop telling me I’m an idiot.

No, but I can tell you the best thing about winter…

When you’re working out in the yard, your beer doesn’t get warm!

What I hate is the people around me in Florida who bitch and moan about how cold it is outside, especially when it dips below 32 degrees which is like only 15 days out of the whole season. That’s sweet relief to me, since there is no Spring or Fall season here, just eight months of hot and four months of cool or mildly nippy.

You should hear the local weather guys when it looks like it’s going to…gasp…DROP BELOW FREEZING FOR A FEW HOURS OVERNIGHT! IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD!!!

People break out parkas at about 50F.

There is no winter here. It can get dang chilly, but it very rarely approaches cold. Or what I call cold. And I haven’t lived in a genuine cold climate since we left Ohio when I was six.

I’d LOVE a mild winter. But no, I end up in south Louisiana. sigh The worst thing about winter here for me is the utter lack of one!

The worst thing about winter, is that it only happens once a year, and even then for only 3 months or so. I was in Montreal over Christmas/New Year. I LOVED IT; the snow, the cold, the shovelling. It was great. I cant wait to go back, as I hear its really cold there now. Sure beats our 30+ heatwaves.
