I think it’s based on Demotivators, which are based on those motivational posters with one word and a motivational phrase.
It’s not LOLcats, but it often includes cats and sometimes poor grammar.

In all the Caturday lolcats threads on Fark.com, there are things similar to the Serious Cat poster, all relating to cats, of course. To me, it’s just an extension of the lolcats thing.
