I had one of these as a kid, but evidently forgot and thought it was for cheese. I think cookie dough is correct now that I think back. It worked pretty well though there are probably better methods.
I would think a scoop would work significantly better. I’m trying to figure out how to get even little balls of dough with that thing.
I think if you roll the dough into a rope, you can then use this tool to cut off sections from the end of the dough rope. It’s an effective way of making uniform cookies, especially if you’re trying to make small cookies.
You don’t get even little balls of dough. You get uneven lumpy clumps of dough that even out while baking. The texture is better. My grandmother – whose favorite past time, as far i could tell, was making chocolate chip cookies with her granddaughter – taught me that plumper cookies require not messing with the dough too much because the heat from our palms melts the butter more which will result in flat cookies. As I recall, she used two spoons as an alternative to this device and never touched the dough with her hands.
