What's this piece of window hardware called?

I have a hinged wood window that swings out. However, once you unlatch it, it swings free, so in a good breeze it can slam open and closed.

There’s a piece of hardware which looks like a rod or arm which is attached to the frame of the window. Then on the sill, a knob is attached, which the rod slides through: loosen the knob, open the window, tighten the knob, and the arm stays in place, the window stays in place.

I want to buy one online but have no idea what it is called. Can’t find them at the local hardware store, either, and couldn’t get someone who knew what they are called.

So what is this great invention called?

I know exactly what you mean. I grew up with plenty of friends who had windows like this in their houses, and i also knew people who had an even older style, which instead of a knob and slide rod, just had holes in the rod which would sit over a little knob on the window sill.

Anyway, i have no clue what they’re called, and like you, i couldn’t find anything about them online.

Maybe one of these?

Nice find! That’s the stuff.

Excellent! Thanks very much.
