What's up with the PS2's selection?

**

PS2 has Ready 2 Rumble, SSX, Twisted Metal: Black, Red Faction, DOA 2, Crazy Taxi, and Time Crisis 2. Other games that you can just pick up and play that are were just released include Half-Life, 18-Wheeler American Pro Trucker, Disney’s Tarzan, and Wave Rally.

**

If you’re a dihard Dreamcast fan, fine. Stick with it with the knowledge that they’re going to stop making games for it soon if they haven’t already.

**

I don’t find the PS2 games to be over complicated. Even Madden 2001 has three different difficulty levels as well as a tutorial so learning to play shouldn’t take more then 30 minutes to an hour.

**

Many of which will be on the PS2 with better graphics and perhaps more bonus material. I imagine Sega will even release Sonic for the PS2, X-Box, and Gamecube eventually.

Marc

Since when does the administration care if we talk about the playing of import games? Sure mod chips kill your warrantee, but AFAIK, they’re not illegal either?

And stop calling us nuts.

MGibson -

I already have R2R: R2 for DC, and I’ve played DOA2, so there’s no reason to buy Hardcore (might rent it, though, if I ever get a PS2). I think at least two of the games you mentioned are of the “complicated shooter” variety, which I do not find fun or easy (really, I gave up on Duke Nukem 3D after about 10 minutes). In any case, this is still an awfully small percentage for a $300 system. And what the hell happened to the arcade ports? Besides Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, CART Fury, and maybe a couple others, what is there? (No, DOA2 Hardcore doesn’t count.) Again, why is it so HARD to find almost everything for this supposedly advanced system that it was so EASY to find for nearly everything else? (It wasn’t that hard for me to find a PSX joystick, either. The store eventually ran out, but I found it.)

I’m not saying that Tekken Tag Tournament, DOA2 Hardcore, Gauntlet: Dark Legacy etc. aren’t good games. But I’m going to have to see a lot more than this before I proclaim the PS2 as a substitue for anything.

Re: “They’re” not producing games for DC anymore. By “they”, do you mean Capcom (Giga Wing 2, Gunbird 2)? Or Sega (18 Wheeler)? Or Midway (everything they’ve released for PS2 they’ve also done for DC)? Or SNK (there will be a Mark of the Wolves release)? Open your eyes, man. The gaming world extends beyond Squaresoft, 50-weapon first-person shooters, and whatever “red-hot” strategy sequel is in the works. And even if the system is “dead” (and I’d like something a lot better than the cancellation of the system…I already HAVE the system!), I don’t need 500 games. I only need a handful of good games. (And preferably other games available for rental; that’s what drew me to the DC in the first place.)

I have no reason to believe the ridiculous notion that everything’s going to be better on the PS2. I’ve SEEN Crazy Taxi for PS2, dammit (in CompUSA, to be specific), and there was NO improvement. I’m sick of so-called experts hashing bits and specks and particles and this and that when I cannot see the improvement with my own eyes.

And even if there are tangible improvements, we’re talking a $300 system with no 4-player capability…that’s extra…and monumental, colossal delays in nearly everything.

I’ve been patient. And it’s time Sony realized that there are plenty of other entertainment options right now, and the DC isn’t going quietly no matter what the yammering magazine articles say, and the X-box and others will eventually arrive, and if they don’t quit dragging their feet on absloutely everything, it’s THEIR console next on the chopping block!

pant…that is all.

Variety, my friends. Variety.

This is pathetic. There were no good games for the PS1 when it came out, and now there are no good games for the PS2. Is it so amazingly hard to have four of five decent titles ready at launch??

This sucks, pure and simple. No, I won’t be buying a Dreamcast - no matter how much I love Soul Caliber. I remain faithful to the PS2. But still, the lack of good game selection right now blows goats.
-Ben

When Sega announced the cancellation, they said that they were going to continue making games for 18 more months. That was several months back, so we’ve still got over a year of good, cheap games with amazing graphics and playability.

My wife had to drag me out of EB yesterfday, they were selling DC for $80!!! Meanwhile she goes ahead and buys “Dance Dance Revolution” for PS1 with the pad to use for exercise, goes for $55!!! AAAARGH!!!

**

I didn’t think any of the games I mentioned were complicated. And I wouldn’t consider myself to be a hardcore gamer.

**

If you don’t like the PS2 that’s cool with me. But it sounds to me like you’re just making up reasons to dislike it.

**

Who really cares about arcade ports? From everything I’ve heard DOA: Hardcore is tons better then it ever was in the arcade. While I enjoy arcade games very few of them have any depth of play. You spend quarters and play for a few minutes then you later rinse and repeat as necessary. There’s not as much depth in them as there are in games that are made for consoles.

And besides the arcade ports you mentioned there is Silent Scope, Silent Scope 2, Tekken 4, Virtua Fighter 4, and Time Crisis 2.

**

It isn’t all that hard to find anything for the PS2. I haven’t had difficulty with accessories or games. Well I admit I did have some difficulty with games when the system first came out. But since then I’ve had no problems.

**

Well that’s fine. I think you’re a Die Hard DC fan and you’re sticking with DC no matter what.

**

Many games that were slated for Dreamcast were cancelled. So far as I know 18 Wheeler is already out for DC but will be coming out for PS2 shortly. It won’t be very long before all DC game production comes to an end.

**

Well it shouldn’t be long before your selection of DC games to rent will dry up. Of course being as they’ve got some excellent games for a fairly inexpensive price you’ll be able to buy the good ones.

**

That happens sometimes when a game is ported from a lesser system to a better one. Blame the company that makes Crazy Taxi. I agree that DC wasn’t a bad system. But PS2 will has plenty of decent games and their selection appears to be getting better every month.

**

The DC is dead. It is no longer a signifigant factor to Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft.

Marc

And don’t forget a few extra bucks to get one of those office floor mats to put over the pad to help keep it from slipping. That can run up to $30, or $5 more than the DC.

As for arcade ports, there will be a ton more now that Sega is developing for PS2, and there’s also all the Bemani music games, complete w/ gimmick controllers, if you’re so inclined.

MGibson - First off, please quit that garbage about the DC being “dead”, like that’s something to celebrate (and you’re demented if you think it is). It’s dead when the very last game comes out. Don’t forget that the NES soldiered on well after it was supposed to have been supplanted by the SNES (and you can still buy the games in some stores).

You think I’m making up reasons not to like the PS2? Why bother, when the reasons are already in abundance? Hey, I bought both Neo Geo systems (yeah, enormous waste of money, I know, I know…I was so naive then), so I know when a system isn’t living up to its potential.

Look, my whole family has been thinking of getting a PS2 for well over a year now. I want it to be a worthwhile system, but thus far I’ve seen no evidence of it being so. I know games are being developed, but the system is difficut to program for (a well-published fact), so it could be a while. Now, from what I’ve seen of the X-Box, their selection is even worse (this is a computer company’s system, don’t forget), but the Gamecube is a different story. Understand now, brand loyalty is a foreign concept to us. If Nintendo is willing to discard that “family system” crap and make games for players, not politicians, and the PS2 that can play imports (we’ve pretty much given up on the domestic market at this point) still isn’t 1) available 2) at a reasonable price…well, nice knowin’ ya, Sony.

What’s really killing us over this decision is that the PS2 would be the perfect choice for a new system; it can run PSX games and is compatible with the PSX perhiperals we already have. But there is no way in hell any of us is shelling out $300 for a system with a meager selection of $50-80 games that none of us are going to play and where new development is forever “just a few months away”.

If Sony did nothing else but follow the same strategy with the PS2 that they did with the PSX (wide range of games, plenty of perhiperals, modchipping readily available), we’d probably have one right now. But we’re not going to fool ourselves into thinking that this system is worth the cost when it clearly is not.

But it doesn’t seem like you’ll ever be convinced…so forget it. I’ve made my points and I won’t argue anymore. I’m not going to butt heads with anyone’s fanboyism. Heck, I can barely stand it when I’m not trying to fight it.

**

I’m not celebrating it I’m simply being realistic. If you look at past post in this thread you’ll see that I’ve even considered buying one. For the one hundred dollar price tag plus the adundance of fun and inexpensive games it is quite a bargain.

**

Ok, if it makes you feel a bit better I’ll refer to it as that console that is gasping its last dying breath.

**

Yeah and it was eventually phased out. DC will not receive the attention from SEGA that the NES did from Nintendo.

**

I feel your pain, brother. I bought a Sega CD and a Sega GameGear. I almost bought a 32x and I thank the video game gods every day that I never did. And yeah I do think you’re being a bit nit picky about the PS2.

**

I’ve found the opposite to be true. They’ve released some pretty good games and they continue to release good games every month. But they’re not to your taste.

**

New development is not forever a few months away. Here’s a list of games being released in September. Tim Crisis 2, Beast Wars, NFL Blitx 20-02, NHL Hitz 2002, Run Like Hell, Capcon Vs. SNK 2, Supercar Street Challenge, Shadow Man: 2nd Coming, Artic Thunger, Silent Scope 2, Silent Hill, Soul Reaver 2, F1 2001, Evil Twin, and Cyprien’s Chronicals.

**
I count 92 games being released in October, November, and December. There are a wide variety of games available now and the selection is getting better. Personally I’m not a big fan of perhiperals or modchipping.

I am a fanboy but not for Sony. I was a Nintendo and Sega fanboy for many years and this is the first Sony game system that I’ve ever bought. One of the reasons I didn’t wait for the GameCube was because the N64 was so disappointing. If you think the PS 2 doesn’t have a good selection of games you need to check out the N64.

Marc

Hey, one of N64’s first games was a Star Wars title (Shadows of the Empire), and whatever shortcomings you may think that game had, I always thought it kicked ass.

You can’t compare PS2’s opening lineup with N64’s, as the latter had games that EVERYBODY could enjoy, and came out with good ones regularly. The biggest flaw Nintendo had was that they insisted on sticking with cartridges, which greatly increased the price of every N64 game.

I’ll be getting a PS2 for DVDs, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Silent Hill 2.

Remember that for months, almost the only PS1 games available were–you guessed it–sports and racing. In fact, I was rooting for the Saturn for a while because of that. But then the better games started coming out and I had to concede… with the PS2, you already have access to all the best games from PS1 while you wait (with slightly improved graphics, I think?).

Speaking of mod chips, they aren’t really that hard to install if you know how to use a soldering iron. The points are pretty small, but I was able to get mine to work. (Side note: I hear that PS2 will play import PS1 games… is that true? Does it also play CD-R backups of PS1 games?)

There are a couple things that come to my mind when I think about PS2. Yes, I love my Dreamcast dearly, adn i would enver give it up. The mention of mod chips is a real plus with me. Anyway, the only thing I think PS2 has on DC is Gran Turismo 3, and the ability to play DVDs. Although I have a serperate stand-alone DVD player, I do think that having the option to play DVDs has bought in a couple gamers. I will tell you this much though. I will definetly buy a PS2 when, and only when, the price drops this fall. I am almost certain it will happen (I mean, with the release of 2 next gen consoles within two weeks of each other, Sony has to get a price difference of about $100 to compete with Xbox, who wants to buy old hardware for $300 when the top of the line, brand new hardware is also $300 (or $200 in Nintendo’s case)). I do look forward to playing my GT3 with full analog control in the gas and breaks (another thing Dreamcast had that PS will never be able to manipulate, the shoulder buttons that, if held down half way, would only uinput half of the gas, genious)

I’m sorry, I know how irritating a double-post can be, but, I just wanted to go ahead and kill myself for all those typos. What a mess ;

SSX is great, NHL 2001 and FIFA Soccer 2001 are very good. So is Gran Turismo 3.

I don’t like role playing games or the shooter games like Quake so I can’t comment on those.

It’s better to have a smaller number of good games than lots of games that are not that good. I think the PS2 has been pretty easy to get for a while now. I got mine on Jan 1st. , but I was lucky. I had to ask for one , they did not put them on the shelves back then because they were afraid people would buy them to resell for a quick profit.

Programming games is very hard - I know a guy who was a very good programmer but lost a job doing games because he was not good enough.

I think one of the things that is sorely lacking from the PS2 lineup is any kind of new game that’s easy to pick up and play. By the time the Dreamcast was a year old, we had Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio (I think, maybe 18 months) Sonic, Soul Calibur, NFL2K series, Chu Chu Rocket and many others. N64 had Mario 64, Waverace, the first WCW wrestling game and a few others.

All of these games were new, easy to play and gave the systems their own identity and a reason for you to go and play.

The ps2 currently has either ports or graphical enhancements to existing games.

I beat Crazy Taxi, Dead or Alive 2, Baldur’s Gate, Resident Evil: CV and several others before the PS2 ever came out. GT3 is just a graphical update to GT2. Try playing it, it’s the exact same tracks and AI. Madden is the same way. Gameday isn’t even a game.

The only two games that make the PS2 truly great are SSX and Tekken Tag and they were release day games. Devil May Cry is starting the trend of new games coming, but it took a very long time, and only very large developers are coming out with the games that will make you think fondly upon the PS2.

I hope the PS2 gets better, but I doubt it. It seems to be a port machine, either PC ports or XBox ports, as right now it’s a PC/DC port machine.

PS2 has Ready 2 Rumble, Crazy Taxi, SSX, DOA 2, Madden 2001-2, Twisted Metal: Black, Red Faction and plenty of others that you can just pick up and play. Maybe I’m missing something here. What constitutes a game that is easy to pick up and play?

**

What were Twisted Metal: Black, SSX, Madden 2001-2, and Dark Cloud ported from?

**
I suppose you could make the arguement that all games in a series are just the same as the old ones. But in fact GT 3 is more then just a simple graphical update to GT2 and Madden on PS2 is vastly improved over Madden from PS1.

**

DOA 2 and Madden are also fantastic games for the PS2.

I disagree but to each his own.
