What's Up With the Uvula?

What purpose, if any, does the uvula serve? It just seems to sort of hang around and not do much of anything.

Apparently it plays an important role in speech when making guttural sounds. You can also have it pierced apparently

Aparently they can be transplanted!!

fron SNL, I believe.

My mother doesn’t have one. She says it was mistakenly removed when she had her tonsils out. I don’t know about that, all I know is that she doesn’t have one; I looked. She says the only problem she has is fluids going up her nose.

“Knock knock.”
“Who’s there?”
“Babs’s uvula!”
“Babs’s uvula who?”
“I don’t know, Babs. But I do know this …”

Paging Uvula Donor.

Apparently the uvula is actively involved in snoring and you can have it blasted away as a remedy. It is explained here.

Yes, uvulopharyngoplasty rocks as a treatment for snoring/apnea, but the procedure does mess with your ability to speak guttural german.

So, the longstanding rumor that German girls can tie knots in cherry stems with their Uvulas is true?

Oh, TMI, TMI! Stop it - the horror!

I had uvulaplasty done last year for sleep apnea and I don’t seem to have any problems or miss it. Then again, I haven’t tried any guttural German.

But your High German is unaffected?

I don’t speak German at all, even when high.
