What's up with ties?

To me, the tie seems to be one of the most useless and somewhat ridiculous articles of men’s clothing. Is the tie of today a vestigial scarf that time forgot? Does anybody know its origins?
Can somebody help me out here?

17th century Croation soldiers were the first to wear something like a neck tie. It was primarily used to wipe sweat from the forehead, but evolved into a fashion statement because of the French. Isn’t that lovely? You can always blame the French.

Well damn. The thread was double-posted. Still, my answer is the most correct one, so this thread can be closed.
