What's with the "National register of Historic Places"??

What is with the obsession that Americans have with the past? In my town (Waltham MA) the old police station is now on the “Register of Historic Buildings” which means (among other things) that the building cannot be modified in any way, which would change its basic appearance. Nor can it be torn down. Well, to me, it is just an old building. I don’t see that it is of any interest at all-to me, it’s just a large nondescript brick building. What really riles me up about this: we have a brand new police station-we don’t need this pile of junk. It is off the tax rolls, so I have to pay more taxes-why don’t they tear it down and put up an apartment house-housing is in short supply, and the city would get some tax income. Plus-who cares about a 120-year old building-it isn’t as if George Washington slept in the place. Finally, my taxes will be used to maintain the dump-so there you have it-what a waste of my money!

eg, you do this a lot. If you have a General Question, ask it. If you want to rant or debate, please open a thread in the appropriate forum.
