Whats wrong with having many wives?

My wife gets possessive if I talk to my friends too much.
If I have a romantic evening out with another wife there’s gonna be bloodshed.

Therein lies the problem. Like many of nature’s creatures we’re built for monogamy IMHO.

The situation Siam Sam describes is a good example. Two monogamous relationships at the same time is as close as you can get to monogamy and still have a stable relationship.
That’s very different to having a harem or a household with multiple wifes due to the changes that would have on the wife’s roles. I would guess Major wife knew that and wanted minor wife kept away.

Polygamous relationships are only stable if there’s a severe imbalance of power in the relationship. Such as in societies where females are not thought to be men’s equals. Without that power to control the parties you get jealousy, possesivness, scheming and tension.

Although I don’t have a Cite to hand the phenomenon was experienced in the “free love” type communities in the 60s and 70s. Although the idea of an open relationship appealed to many, the reality was they tended to pair off anyway.

Islam allows that a man may take up to four wives, but he must treat each equally. (This is due to the fact that pre-Islam Arabia was pretty war-torn and there were a lot of widows who needed support.)

Imagine trying to keep four wives equally - same amounts of attention, clothes, sex, and money. Tough!

(This was a slight hijack. Back to your scheduled thing.)

Who would get the house when the husband dies? It would be chaos.

To quote another thread…

“You don’t want to run out of vaginas.”

Imagine that… and then trying to satisfy 72 virgins (or whateverthehell it is…) in heaven! Not to mention the no pork thing…

This is not a religion I’m yearning to join, to say the least…

** Whats wrong with having many wives?**

Having many mothers-in-law! (ra-pom-Pom!) Thanks ladies and gentiles, I’ll be here all week.

In my father-in-law’s case, each family got to keep the main house of that particular family. (My mother-in-law, the main wife, had died the year before he did). But there were some problems with other property. No major blow-ups over it, but it did exacerbate an already-sad situation.

This is witnessing at best, and a drive-by, and trolling at worst. Look up the one other thread this clown started.

I’m with Boyo Jim. Couldn’t figure out why this was in the pit, anyhow.

Where’d that moderator get to?

What crawled up your ass and died? Millions of people say they believe in the scriptures, yet don’t believe in many parts of it (e.g. dietary restrictions). The OP is asking (I think) why this is (s/he could have been clearer). Its’ a good question. Not sure why its’ in the Pit, but whatev.

If it is trolling, you went for it hook, line, and sinker, guppy.

Why people don’t have several wives where you’re from.

(You know I do not think the board is living up to the Original Poster’s expectations.)

I don’t know about that. My great-grandfather was a polygamist married to two sisters, which worked very well until one was hit by a streetcar. Here is a picture of great-grandad, seated between his two wives, surrounded by all their children.

Doesn’t that sort of limit who you can date in High School?

If it’s trolling, I fell for it, too, I guess because I AM used to people having multiple wives at once. It feels normal to me (although I have just the one … for now  ).

I see what the other poster means by the other thread that Okie started, though.

Yes, but phouka’s excellent post illustrates how polygamy exacerbates the problem of statutory rape. It creates an environment where men who would not normally act that way in a society with monogamous marriage have a vested interest in becoming polygamous statutory rapists.

If you really want to go by what’s written in the Scriptures, show me one example of someone in the Bible having more than one wife where the situation actually worked out well for all concerned.

As for “changing the Sabbath,” Cecil addressed that one.

It’s not created such an environment here. None of the guys I know with second wives goes after underaged girls, nor is sex with underaged girls condoned here. You pretty much have to go next door to Cambodia for that. The authorities have cracked down extremely harshly on men – Thai and farang alike – who try that in Thailand. I suspect you’re thinking of the Muslim four-wives set-up, but it’s not like that everywhere.

In Thailand, do “minor” wives have all the same legal protections as first wives?

Actually, I had the pseudo-Mormon white-guy Western communities, like Bountiful in mind. phouka’s claims have been substantiated by women who have fled such communities.

You say it like those are bad things. The bug screens on the windows really need to be cleaned, and I can’t find anyone to do it without a whip. As for genocide, well, I guess it depends on who gets to use it. And don’t get me started on mutilation as crime deterrent.
