Whats wrong with having many wives?

I think the law has generally taken the sane and sensible position of staying out of family matters whenever possible. At some point of personal detail (like the relations between married couples) the law is an unwieldy, ineffective tool.

The problem is that legislators have to create new laws, lest they be seen as do-nothings. So laws are passed that force the law into the family unit.

The result is a mess. Go watch a nasty child custody trial and see if you think that it is the best way to settle things.

Marriage is LIKE a contract, but it is not one. There are FAR TOO MANY details that are not settled upon beforehand.

At some point people have to work out social relations without the aid of Congress or the courts.

So I agree. Get rid of the bigamy law, but don’t put anything in its place.

My $0.02.

You guys are ignoring the primary benefit tof multiple wives for the successful married men.

All those single guys that were mentioned are available for military service! Why, your army can sustain massive casualties on a fairly regular basis, with a steady supply of new dissatisfied young men ready to rape and pillage foreigners! Why, with only two children per woman, each family can keep one of the boys home, and send two or three off to glory! The real rutty ones can provide even more cannon fodder!

Tris

Yes, that’s why I said “would be prosecutable”. The prosecution would be optional. I’m thinking that someone in the family would have to start it (the state couldn’t on its own), but I’m not quite certain that always blocking the state from initiating such action would be a good idea.

And right there is the biggest downside of Polygamy as it is usually defined.

Multiple wives per husband when the normal population mix is very close to 1:1 means that for every second (or third) wife in a relationship, there is one guy who needs to be taken out of the mix, who has no chance of finding a wife, who needs to seek elsewhere or find other options.

That is double plus ungood.

Not for the army

Nothing changed the Sabbath, it is still modern day Saturday. Sunday is the Lord’s day, the day that Jesus rose from the dead.

Der Trihs There is so much hope for you, I am so happy you see a significant difference between the NT and the OT, and I am sure the Lord rejoices.

  1. It is bad for society. Large numbers of young men with no prospects for marriage and family makes for a dangerous situation. They become second class citizens, so they are easy to radicalize. You can convince them to strap on bombs and go kill the jooos and their lackeys in the United States. Similar things happen when you abort most of your female children. I am looking at you, China.

  2. It is bad for the wives. It ain’t like it is on Big Love, folks. Domestic abuse is almost the rule in such arrangements. The women are downpressed and brainwashed.

  3. Polygamy as it is practiced here in the United States is bad for me, the taxpayer, because usually Eli hasn’t the book-learning to support all his wimmen, so they get welfare. Utah brags it has the highest literacy rate in the US, but it doesn’t help much if all you read is the Book of Mormon. Utah’s performance in math? Not so much, because you don’t need math to read the Book of Mormon. In fact, the kind of logical thinking ability that learning math develops in a person might just make one skeptical of the Book of Mormon, so it isn’t really encouraged. I just returned from Utah (beautiful place but NEVER again  ), and most of the folks I met there are too stupid to support one wife in decent style, much less two or more. I’ve been all over the country and South Park got it right. Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb…

Of course I can’t see the point of having ONE wife. Single By Choice, here. They don’t call me the Happy Wanderer for nothing.

Nothing. If you don’t mind becoming celibate and/or gay a few years after. Not quite there yet after two divorces, but I’m pretty sure I’d be if I was married to both at the same time.

Yeah, sure he did. And I’m sure that people long after he was gone got the day right, down to the day of the week.

The “Lord” does not exist. And I regard all of the Bible as evil, just in different ways. And I’m never going to join your brain dead, misery spreading, sadistic, amoral death cult. Give it up.

Because you’re going to start your own, right, like many other fine crazy people?

Dude, you are doll at the end of some strings. Anyone can come and pull at them and make you dance the same little dance. I look forward to the day where you at least bother to choose new words.

Gosh, it’s a good thing that all that hate and anger hasn’t done anything to YOU.

Although I don’t think I’ll ever be able to read another one of your posts without hearing the (Star Wars) Emperor’s voice behind it.

You are aware that entire population of Utah is not made up of polygamists, yes? In fact, the entire state of Utah isn’t even populated exclusively by Mormons. I’ve lived in Utah for seventeen of my twenty-five years, and I’ve never even met a polygamist. They tend to be in a few strong-holds in southern and central Utah, and there just aren’t that many of them, in comparison with the rest of the population. And most of the people who do practice polygamy have very little contact with the “outside world” and they’re home-schooled, if they have any eduction at all. So the current state of public education in Utah generally has fuck-all to do with the polygamist problem. Even so, I’ve received the bulk of my education in Utah (including my current stint at the University of Utah), and I have to say, if I had to choose between sending a hypothetical child of mine to a school, any school, in Utah, versus sending one to a school in CA, I’ll choose Utah every time.

I understand exaggeration, but your third point goes far beyond exaggeration. It’s one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever read. I mean, I don’t even like Utah that much, and I’d be more than happy to spend some time tearing it apart, and what you posted was just, well, dumb.

No, not at all, because, as I said, it is illegal to have a minor wife. The law does not recognize them, and theoretically the husband could be jailed. (A LOT of police would have to jail themselves while they’re at it, too.) But that certainly NEVER happens. It’s al out in the open, and there’s even a formal religious ceremony cementing the second marriage.

I’m very much against polygamy. A man should never have two or more wives.

One wife is enough, there’s no reason to marry the mistresses, it just makes it harder to get rid of them when you get bored with them.

: : runs and hides: :

From time to time, my own wife will ask – only half-jokingly, I think – about whether I would ever take a minor wife. I always tell my Sweetie that even one wife seems too much at times. Somehow, she’s never satisfied with that answer.

It’s not me who you wrestle against but God Himself, along with his angels. I have seen in you that God has been able to give you all the pieces in a way that you had to receive them - but He did get them through to you, and they seem to be ready for Him to connect.
What a great day when the truth is made know to someone and they realize what the illusion they were living, all theories and worldly knowledge of man shatter before you and those that seemed wise in this world are reveled to be fools and God’s word stands.

Q: Whats wrong with having many wives?

  1. You can’t afford one; how are you going to handle more?

  2. Because you can’t get space at the upstairs bathroom sink now.

  3. Closet space? You’re lucky if you get a cardboard Bacardi box!

  4. PMS multiplies exponentially.

  5. Remembering which dress doesn’t make which one ‘look fat’.

  6. Auto Insurance; even a Caveman wouldn’t do it.

  7. Godiva stopped shipping in Bulk.

  8. A rental of lesbian porn & ‘Double Indemnity’ now seems like a murder plot.

  9. Bloomingdales bags aren’t recyclable.

and of course our top ten answer:

  1. Blisters, blisters, blisters…!

Just because he doesn’t say it nicely doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a point. It always makes me smile when I see one of his posts followed by a bunch of ‘Ha ha, look at the crochety old man’ posts, but then no one argues against his actual assertion.

Until you can actually verify that god exists, that the scriptures came from god, etc., using any of it as a basis for an argument doesn’t work. ‘Its in the bible’ doesn’t make it correct, regardless of how hard you believe in it. It doesn’t matter how many scripture quotes you can dish up, how many times you can cram the word ‘god’ into a post, or how many times you think you’ve personally talked to jesus, until you can bring the proof, it’s just a book. You want to argue about something in reality, you have to use reality to argue with.

I’m with hotflungwok. **Der Trihs ** is certainly obnoxious, but somehow nothing *he’s * said makes my bitchslapping hand itch quite as much as this crap does.
