What's wrong with my printer? Or bad paper?

I have a HP psc1350 printer and every time I try to print out my digital pictures, I get a paper-jam message! Not sure if it’s my printer or not. We didn’t seem to experience this constant annoyance before. I’m wondering if it’s this pckg of paper my SO purchased on the internet  … it’s from the brand name, RoyalBrites, and it’s “high Gloss Photo Paper”

When I que to print, I have to–as always–click properties to change the type/quality of paper and I always pick one for this type of paper. Sooooooooo what gives??? btw, I’ve resorted to printing out one sheet at a time, but that hasn’t prevented the jams.

Help!!!

It is the paper. If you want to prove it, just print a few pages on regular white paper. I doubt there is much you can do about it other than switching paper or resorting to one sheet at a time. It is a common problem. Some printers don’t handle certain paper well.

yup, probably the paper! do you have any other high-gloss photo papaer recommendations?

thanx in advance!

Printing photos online or at a big box retailer is ~$0.15-$0.20 per photo; Home printer ink is pretty expensive and it can be quite difficult to get the colors right on the first try. Might be worth it to just get them printed locally than mess with your printer.

As Stan says, it may be cheaper to print your pix at a place like Walgreens or Ritz. Often, you can go to their website, pick the images and pick up the prints in an hour or next day.

If you want to continue printing your own, stick to the name-brand paper for your printer. That RoyalBrites stuff is probably just too thick/stiff/slick for your printer to handle. Also, HP photo ink is formulated to work best with HP paper. (Same is true for pretty much all other printer brands) Using non-HP photo paper will yield less than ideal results - “off” or muddy colors, smearing and blurry images as the ink doesn’t dry properly.

Pace,
I’ve run into that problem with most of the HP inkjets I’ve used in the past 5 years. It appears that pushing the paper into the printer too far causes mysterious paper jams. You’re supposed to shove the paper in until the first resistance is felt, not until it won’t go further. If the paper’s in too far the printer will pull multiple pages simultaneously and jam. It manages to jam with single sheets, too. I think the shiny coating on photo paper exacerbates the problem by making the paper stick together more than plain bond paper does.

[opinion mode] Because of those maddening paper jams, the cost of ink cartridges, and dubious durability of the devices, I now have a Canon Pixma that I’m happy with [/opinion mode].

Here is the HP site for help with paper jams with your printer. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?dlc=en&lc=en&product=306888&cc=us&docname=bpu00697

Should you want to try another paper, I’ve used the Kodak branded photo papers in a number of HP printers with no problems. They feel like “real” photos and are available almost everywhere, including most WalMarts, Targets, OfficeMax/Depot, and Staples. There’s a web link on the packaging with settings for your specific printer, too. I’ve not noticed that with many other brands.
