What's wrong with my rice cooker?

When I use my rice machine, these bubbles start appearing and will keep on growing unless I take the top off, and then the rice comes out nasty. Does this happen with other people? What am I doing wrong?

Try washing the rice before putting it in the cooker.

Try a different type of rice.

Chiming in from the Land of the Rice Cooker here. My wife says bubling is normal and not to take the lid off.

I can’t say I’ve ever watched it cook myself; I just listen for the lever to pop up telling me it’s ready. However, I would suggest you try jasmine rice. That’s considered the highest quality, or at least the jasmine rice from Thailand is considered so. It’s never served at food stalls or lower-priced resturants, because it’s too expensive.

When it’s really going, my rice cooker ( bought in an Asian grocery store, can’t remember which brand it is… ) expels steam and with it some starchy steam and stuff. It dried afterwards and is easy to clean off.

I’ve never tried rinsing Korean rice first. Must try that out.

Starchy bubbles filling the airspace in the cooker are normal. It looks like the thing is gonna boil dry; it won’t, due to rice cooker magic. Taking the lid off is NOT a good idea; that ruins everything. Just let it bubble away until the lever pops up & the rice is done.

What you’re doing wrong is that you’re watching the rice cooker. Haven’t you heard the adage, “A watched pot never boils”? It’s the same for rice cookers. Don’t watch it. Just set it, then go away and let it do its magic. Also don’t open it immediately after it pops up; wait fifteen minutes or so for best results.

I agree. It bubbles, and that’s how life is. With nice, hot rice, life is gooooood.

We wash rice to remove the loose rice particles which cause “bubbling”.
