What's wrong with soap opera police?

Sheesh. I was standing in line at the supermarket and the headline of Soap Opera Digest (I think, I wasn’t looking carefully) had an eye-grabbing headline. “Who’s Next To Die?”

It got me to wondering. How in the world can the police officers in Soap Opera Town be so completely incompetent? People are kidnapped, impersonated, killed but not killed, killed but are really killed, killed but later replaced by an evil twin, shot, have affairs, break into each others’ houses, all of the suspects are related, and where are the friggin’ police? pant pant Does this not strike anybody else as laughable?

Okay. Yes. They’re soap operas, I’m sorry. Still. You have to wonder.

Does anybody who watches them care to comment on the police presence in Soap Opera World? Are there any other great omissions in police work in film or TV?

FISH

Eh. That’s what you get for shooting on video.

What?

Eh. That’s what you get for shooting on video.

What?

Well the police do arrest some people but the DA office screws up the prosecution quite a bit. So the combination of the two means that if you want to commit a crime. A soap opera town is the place to do it.

In Soap Opera Land, it seems that everybody has a job and yet nobody works, including the police and the DA’s.

Soap Opera Land absolutely has police officers!! It’s just that they (the cops) are so busy having affairs with their wives’ sisters’ cousins’ triplet teenage daughters that they haven’t got enough time to arrest people!

When i saw the thread title, i thought it was going to be a rant about people who look down their nose at soap operas.

Get it? The soap opera police?

Never mind.

Nonsense. Soap Opera police have plenty of time to arrest people. They just usually arrest the wrong people, so that a judge and jury can convict them and sustain a plot for many months.

Many months in real time but only two weeks soap time

I have friends who write for soaps. It is incredibly hard work and I have the utmost respect for them. There are folks who write for prime time who say that they could NEVER write for soaps because they don’t have the drive and intensity needed to do so (well, excluding Days and Passions from that list - I think those writers are all on crack anyway).

As far as the soap police go, I’m guessing that headline was from ATWT. The cops ARE idiots, but that predates the headwriter over there;). One of the cops is just a bumbling big guy, the other is a woman who’s pretty good. However, in order for the story to go the way it needs to, the cops have to be idiots. Pure and simple;).
