On the trails on Saturday hiking Devils Lake:
First the good which will be all blooming flowers and a bird.
Now for the bad.
I maintain a hiking trail by a reservoir that has a lot of fishermen that fish from shore. They get pretty disgusting. It’s not just the underwear and toilet paper, but styrofoam containers for worms, food wrappers and empty beer bottles. If anyone reading this is a fisherman, please oh please oh pleeeease take your garbage with you and bury anything you can’t.
I look for interesting rocks and flowers too. I got a nice piece of quartz the other day. Turkey vultures are a dime a dozen around here, after seeing one up close I don’t look at them much anymore.
I found a gold hoop style earring!
Turkey Vultures are common around here too. They can hoover close to your face just off where you can stand at Devil’s Lake. Occasionally one will slowly rise from below your feet to above your head not more than 10 feet away. You can watch the wings adjust and the feathers move. They were no closer than about 40 feet away this time and not rising so slowly.
I found a bunch of orchids, but I didn’t have my camera.
After coming home from work, tired and stressed, I finally did something positive: went for a walk with the dog in the regional park out my back yard (as opposed to having a cocktail and some potato chips!) The first calypso orchids of the year are out! I just think it’s very cool to have an orchid growing here.
I found an Attack of the Clones DVD while I was out walking last weekend.
Okay, granted, I was out walking at a flea market.
This morning I found an empty bottle that once held 100 tablets of OxyContin. It has a sticker that reads “This package contains a radio frequency device.”
I’m taking it home to see if any DEA agents show up at my door.
Cigarettes? They still make those?
We saw a (live) pheasant in the woods.
I’ve never seen a pheasant in the wild, in fact the only pheasant I can recall ever seeing is the one my Dad stuffed as a kid and still sits in Grandma’s living room.
Octopus.
Tidal pool, St. Croix.
Sitting on my deck enjoying the warmth I saw:
my chickens, geese and one duck basking in the sun until:
one of the pair of mated eagles living in my woods did a very low altitude flyby carrying
a brown and white guinea pig!
So, that’s something the **eagle **found while out & about…
