These are so big though it’d be hard to resist. Mario Kart and Smash Brothers have never been huge outside of Nintendo fanboys - in fact, since I didn’t have a Gamecube I’ll admit to having thought that Smash Bros. was a relatively obscure one-off on N64 that my friends and I mildly enjoyed, and I wasn’t even aware the Double Dash existed until I started reading about MK:W. These, though, are getting mainstream media coverage. I’m pretty sure they’re the best-selling Wii games so far - were their ancestors ever the best-selling games on their systems?
Almost. Wii Sports is obviously the king. And then Wii Play is next. But after that it goes Galaxy, Brawl, Mario Party 8, Zelda, Mario and Sonic at the Olympics and then Mario Kart.
As for the N64 and GameCube renditions, Super Smash Bros is #6 on the list and Kart 64 was #2 behind Mario 64. As for the GameCube, Smash Melee and Double Dash are neck-and-neck at the top with 7 million each.
Interesting. Now that you say Melee I remember my nephew had it, so i wasn’t completely oblivious :D. I’d like to see the stats in 6 months when Brawl and Kart have been on the market for awhile.
I knew Sports was the “best selling” game on the console but it’s kind of hard to take that seriously when it comes free in every box. And Wii Play got a huge boost from people (like me) who needed an extra controller and nunchuk after Xmas and couldn’t find one anywhere. I played that steaming turd once and thanked og it only technically cost me 10 bucks.
Today, I went to check the results of the tournament, which supposedly ended yesterday. Well, it’s still letting you participate and post scores this morning. My husband just entered and his current record is 1:54.something with Luigi and the Mach Bike. I got 2:00.8something with Diddy Kong and the Sugarscoot.
My time was also set with my Mii and the Mach Bike.
