The earliest on Google is May 1996 although I posted to Usenet at least 2 years before that.
Good question. I can’t find a record older than 1999. Dependent on how you define Internet it’d be as early as 1989 (a DOS computer network of hotels/motels/restaurants owned or managed by Marriott) or 1994 (a local Montgomery AL based chat board) but most of the places I remember going to after I had full time net access (1996) are no longer there. There are reviews on Amazon that I wrote in summer 1998 that are the oldest I can find.
What’ super irritating in academia is that I’ve designed God-knows-how-many web tutorials and the like but a year or two after I leave they’re dismantled altogether or moved to another site with nothing about my authority of it, etc… The reverse of Birth of a Nation I suppose- it’s history writ on lightning.
Does anybody know what the oldest continuously operated non-huge-corporation owned/operated website is? (Examples of non-huge corporation owned/operated would be snopes, drudgereport, etc…)
I am now a junior in college and I remember chat house…it was just chathouse.com and I honestly think the first time I used it was in 4th or 5th grade. I also remember knowing html before jr high started…maybe it meant I was special…
The first thing I did on the internet was to get a Yahoo! Mail account to write to my girlfriend, in 1997. I got access at the public library. I still have that account, too!
I found a couple of my posts to alt.folklore.urban from 1992 archived at a folklore website.
August, 1990, in rec.aviation was the oldest I could find on Google…
But I know there were earlier postings than that. I believe my first post to Usenet was back in the early 1980’s.
I think my earliest dated record on the internet was when I first joined this Board back in the beginning of 2000 (after having lurked for a few months). A lot of my earlier writings seem to be on the 'net, some as old as the mid 1970s. But I didn’t post them, and they weren’t from the internet or darpanet or any previous incarnation. Somebody else has put them up within the past five years or so.
I know I was on Compuserve in 1990 but I hadn’t travelled much outside of it on the Internet. So I doubt I can find any evidence of it…
There is an entire webpage from a listserv archive which says “distribute them at all?” with my name and an ancient email address, and nothing else. The web address includes 1994/Oct/, which is about right. My very first email doesn’t seem to have left any traces on the web.
My first Net presence is dated Thu, 15 Aug 1991 11:22:00 +1000 – it’s a message to what was at the time a BITNET list. (And since the computer network that I was on was not directly connected with BITNET, we had to use devious email addressing to post messages on it).
I can go back to at least the summer of 1993, seems a lot of my posts on usenet are from that time. Very interesting to see my old posts.
Mine was on Fri, Oct 17th, 1997 at 8:31:31 PM CDT on the Ace of Base Café. I was very annoying, and used about twelve exclamation points, but I figure I get a pass seeing as I was 14 at the time. My sceen name at the time was CANADA1952, and I used a fake last name. Technically, the sceen name was my mom’s, but I don’t think she made that post ;).
My earliest recorded post was Fri, May 13 1994 3:57 pm on soc.culture.african.american, but that was just a test post.
The earliest where I actually said something was Thurs, Apr 2 1998 12:00 am on sci.aeronautics.airliners answering a question about Northwest Airline’s DC-10 fleet
I know I posted to the Usenet between 1991 and 1993, but I can’t for the life of me remember what handle I was using back then, so I’d have no luck finding my posts from then. I only started using my current screen name (or variants on it) when I started posting here in 1999.
Mine’s from the summer of 1999 – the list of the day on the Dilbert Web site.
Dec 7, 1994, posting on rec.arts.books.childrens. Boy, that was weird to read. It sounds like something I’d say, though.
My earliest recorded Usenet post is dated 01/05/1998 in rec.music.bluenote with some pithy comments on the relative merits (or lack thereof) of the soprano saxophone in jazz. It’s pretty frightening actually… since I made an almost identical post to Cafe Society on the same topic just a couple of weeks ago. Well not literally identical, but expressing much same viewpoints some 8 years later.
I’m either boringly consistent, or stagnant in my thought-processes… not sure which is worse.
Actually my earliest presence on Usenet was around April 1997, but I was using WebTV at the time and *DejaNews didn’t start archiving our posts until late December of that year. I remember it * well since, at the time, we never realized or anticipated that our posts would ever be archived for posterity. Thankfully, WebTV never archived anything much beyond 60 days, but Deja changed all that… at least with the Usenet posts.
Monday January 22nd 1996 on alt.music.smash-pumpkins. I was posting there earlier than that, but that’s about as far as the Google/Deja archives of that group date back to.
I get a hit in Feb 95 in alt.callahans.
There were some tech group postings a little before that, and private BBS and CompuServe posts for about 5 years prior to that, but none of those survive anywhere.
