What's your earring game?

Seconded, ZipperJJ! I saw at least three that I plan to order!

Just one piercing per lobe, even though I sometimes consider getting a second piercing in each lobe. I have also sometimes thought about getting a helix piercing, but after just reading an article about cartilage piercing, I’ll probably just stick with the holes I got. Might buy an ear cuff sometime.

I didn’t wear any earrings for the first few months of the pandemic. As the hole in my right ear is messed up (I got my ears pierced, they got infected, so I had to let them close up and then get pierced again, but the right piercing somehow crosses the original piercing), I thought I might have to get my right ear pierced again to be able to wear earrings again.

I have two different pairs gold hoops that are my default earrings. I usually take one of those pairs for traveling, and, as they are hoops, don’t give me problems with mask loops.

I’ve now mostly gone back to wearing earrings about 3-5 days per week, depending on whether I have to wear a mask, what I’m doing, etc.

I have probably about 70 pairs of earrings, and probably only wear about 10 pairs in rotation. The others are either uncomfortable, or too small to be seen, if I have my hair loose.

Which is the other thing. Two years ago I had short hair. Now I have “growing out” hair, so it’s neither long or short. But it means my ears are often covered, and my bangs are not long enough to stay behind my ears. So, if I’m going to wear earrings, I will choose something which can be seen.

And thanks for the link for the comfy site. The next time someone asks me for gift suggestions, I’m pointing them there, particularly the bees.

Thin hoops through the eyelets are nice because they’re not particularly heavy, and of course the squishiness of the eyelet jewelry can be advantageous since they don’t make a lot of racket and have some give if you’re being active or fall asleep with your jewelry on. I lost one while biking to work one day when the clasp opened after I hit a pothole going through an intersection. : )
I do have some larger gauge fancy jewelry, some acrylic and some buffalo horn, these get worn to special functions sometimes, like weddings or the opera- I’m going to be dressed up and cleaned-up so they’re a nice visual for ceremony. I really dig larger spiral shapes, they look good on most people. I’ve always been a bit nervous about glass jewelry though the plug-style is probably least fragile.

I keep small silver forever hoops in the second lobe holes. Then on occasion will put in other ss clasp dangles

My mom preferred gold settings so if I want to wear her blue topaz dangles I struggle to remove the teeny hoops with my clumsy claws because the hoops look chintzy next to the gold. So I rarely wear moms.

I never wanted my ears pierced. When my daughter got hers done, her dad took her and I took a walk - just the thought of it made me woozy. So my earring game is none.

In the long lost past, I’ve tried clip-ons and screw-post earrings, but I’d find myself fussing with them too much, so I just quit wearing anything on my ears. In fact, the only jewelry I wear is a plain gold wedding band. I’m just not much into jewelry.

I was wondering if anyone would chime in about clip ons. They seem like a good idea but I remember wearing them as a kid and they are not comfortable. Especially if you’re not used to having stuff hanging off your ears.

Although I also wonder if they’re very common. Seems like there’s always someone on tv just swiping their fingers over their ears to remove their earrings in one fell swoop. Those have got to be clips!

That’s all my mom wears. And she always seems to have earrings on. Of course, I don’t know how recently she’s bought any…

Neat! I bet they feel totally normal to her.

Clip ons also have the convenience of not having to clean them every time you swap them out. Probably way easier to deal with as you get older too.

Grandma wore clip ins so did my Mom. I came across a really groovy pendant on a long chain with matching clip onbig groovy earrings amongst my Mom’s jewelry boxes after she died. All the girls in the family were rummaging through it all.

No one took those pieces and I almost did but we already had so much stuff to sort and keep from the apartment I put it in the St Barnabas pile.

Now I regret it a little, after looking at what I brought home on closer inspection there are some cool pieces here from her Moms era too.

Several years ago I went through a phase of buying Mid-Century Modern jewelry on ebay. I would usually buy necklace/earrings sets and those earings are always screw-in or clip-ons. I didn’t buy them if they were screw-ins. I had some of my mother’s and I could never get them to a comfortable place. The clip-ons are okay for a few hours but then the pressure starts to get annoying and I have to take them off for a bit to let my ear breathe. But I will wear them because MCM jewelry is fabulous.

I’m 65 and got my ears pierced in the summer of 74 before my senior year in high school. My mom and my best friend and I took a road trip to the East Coast to visit colleges and some other historical junk. BF and I got our ears pierced at some place in Nantucket. I’m a conservative jewelry person. I stick to gold or silver small unadorned earrings. The last year I’ve worn nothing but hoops, I take them out nightly and truthfully, have never cleaned one pair of earrings ever.

When my ears start ringing, I know my tinnitus is acting up. I ignore it until it goes away. But it can also be a symptom of aspirin overdose.

I only wear that ring in one ear.

My dad had that. He eventually had the 8th nerve severed, which stopped it. It drowned out his ability to hear in that ear anyway.

I also got mine pierced the first time as a kid (mall piercing). By high school, I wasn’t wearing earrings often. From then until a few years ago, I’d just re-poke the holes whenever I wanted to wear earrings.

A few years ago, I decided I wanted a second hole (apparently, that’s common for middle aged women - enough that it’s a “trend”) and had that done.
From there, I wore earrings every day until about a year ago when my ears started to complain. I took the earrings out and within two weeks, the holes closed up (not just the new piercings, one of the older ones, too.)

Now that things are opening up again, I think I’d like to get everything re-pierced.

Simple studs now, and actually all thru the pandemic, hoops were too difficult with masking.

After all the horror stories I head/read about spinal taps, I would think that if I ever got one, I would thereafter be more afraid of needles.

Male, 50s. I got my left ear pierced around 15, and the right when I was 19. I did wear some larger heavier rings when I had long hair, going for a kind of gypsy look, I guess. Or pirate. Nothing too fancy, just larger thicker hoops than the standard sleepers. Then I got some Indian (from India) ones that were a bit more fancy and I wore those a fair bit for a while. Hoops, but with a bit more decoration on them.

And eventually I cut my hair short and went back to standard sleepers, which have been constantly in my lobes ever since. The ones in there now have been there for a decade or so.

I did consider, for a while, getting some solid gold sleepers, just for the heck of it. Not obviously expensive ones, just some nice gold. Solid, not plated, which always wears off. When I looked into that, they were affordable, and I could, if I so desired, get some. Maybe I will, but I’m in no hurry.

I bet they are fabulous!

I have a couple black onyx rings with filligree and marcasite, a large smoky quartz ring and a dragonfly pendant that I think is from the 30’s.

When we found the boxes I admit it all looked kind of cheap and very old fashioned. So no one was super excited just hmmm interesting. I’m glad I took what I did it’s been fun investigating jeweler marks and figuring this stuff out.

I pierced my left earlobe when I was 19. I went through a succession of ear rings and finally settled on a small 18 gauge captive ball ring about 25 years ago. After I retired I got 2 piercings in my right earlobe and worked with them and now have two endless 14 gauge hoops that I just leave in.
