Finally got to see this on stage and enjoyed myself immensely. So, since the show has been on tour a few years and the cast recording readily available, I thought I’d see how Dopers feel. Whether it’s because of the quality of the songwriting, the stage presentation, or both–what’s your favorite number from THE BOOK OF MORMON?
Songs are listed in the order they’re sung in the show.
Big toss-up for me between “I Believe” and “Spooky Mormon Hell Dream.” The US touring show was so expensive, I wound up going to London for some unrelated reason and seeing it there.
It is really weird. I saw it in Chicago and it was quite reasonable - like maybe $120 a ticket. I can afford that.
I tried to see it when it came to Albany and got all pissed off. Because you can’t just buy the tickets, oh no. You have to buy a “subscription” to the theater in question, which runs anywhere from $250 to $500. Then, the subscription includes four shows but doesn’t include Book of Mormon, so you have to buy them as addons, which is another $175 apiece.
I’m sorry, I don’t have nearly $400 just to see one show. Oh, and you can’t pick what’s in the subscription, either.
You just don’t know how to shop. I saw it at Proctor’s and paid $25 per seat (I’m a subscriber in the cloud corner seats). And the subscription that year was probably the best they ever had, including War Horse.
Mormon coming back in the fall, but you are not required to buy a series – you just have to wait until individual tickets are sold. Proctor’s first sells to season ticket holders, then to those buying subscriptions, and finally to the general public. You should be able to pick up tickets to individual shows in a month or so (though Book of Mormon will sell out fast).
“I Believe” and “Spooky Mormon Hell Dream” (I can’t believe that Jesus called me a DIIIIIICK!) are both excellent, but “Hasa Diga Ebowi” is the [del]earworm[/del] standout of the show. Once in your head, it takes hours to get rid of it.
I voted Spooky Mormon Hell Dream just because I like that kind of Tom Waits-y stuff, but really… it was “all of them.” What a great show - one of the few built around in-yer-face crudity that really made me laugh and cheer.
