What's Your Favorite Ice Cream Cone? - An Inappropriate Winter MMP

Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 5c/41f with a predicted high of 9c/48f and partly cloudy. Weather app says “This is the perfect fucking day to one of those fucking weird cuddle clubs. I fucking want to hear all about it.”

Awww…sounds like a day off school would be warranted, it’s probably something she doesn’t want to be spreading around.

Europe is much better with trains than we are  19 minutes is a fairly long time for a connection, especially if it’ s not a massive station so I am sure you’ll be absolutely fine.

At that age, I went to school just over 3 miles from home. If I missed the school bus, I sometimes walked home by myself, often in winter, in the dark. My mum was not worried about me doing that, she was more annoyed that I hadn’t been able to get back by bus.

Stay safe! I hope the Weather Gods are looking favourably on you.

Yesterday was a bit of an odd day at work, there wasn’t much going on and hardly anyone was in so we didn’t really have that much to do. Went home and the commute back was much better than the one coming in. I tended to the needs to cats, made campus food for today, wrapped the last couple of xmas gifts that came in the post yesterday, changed the bedding and put the sheets in the wash. I’d had confused messages from ‘im indoors about his arrival time back from Brizzle. He had said he was leaving work at 3.30pm and might have made it back to our home station 10-15 minutes after me, so I could have waited for him and shared a cab home. Instead, the train he had planned on was late, I got a string of messages about other trains (none of which he got on) and no useful info. I got the bus home instead! He eventually messaged from the station saying he was just getting into a cab so at least I got out of having to collect him!

Today there’s just two of us in the office, and my minion is leaving early. He’s off to visit friends over the border into Wales and asked if he could finish early as the train fare is cheaper. I have no problem with that, it’s so quiet here and he has not got much to do anyway. We’re closing the office today for the xmas break so I’ll be clearing out the fridge and dumping anything left in there because the cleaners will be cleaning all the fridges for us. Then I need to put a notice on the office door as we have two days outside of the University’s official closed days when we’re all working at home. Such is the excitement of my day.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 58 Amurrkin out and partly cloudy with a predicted high of 65 and sunny. I suppose I should take care of candle duty this mornin’. Other than that, we shall be our usual RDOS selves. Sup will be cheeseburgers ‘n fixin’s and sweet N.O.T. fries.

MOOOOOOM glad RoxStar is better.

Nellie I gather the MRI results were no big surprise. Hope you can get some relief.

Hope everyone has weathered or is weatherin’ all the storms safely.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.

Happy Firday Y’all!

Well, that was a night I have no wish to repeat. I knew I was going to have issues falling asleep since I drank caffeinated tea for supper. But I had just dropped off a bit after midnight when I heard FCD futzing in the bathroom.

Turns out he’d gotten himself a nosebleed of spectacular proportions. His pillow was well saturated, so while he was trying to stem the flow, I took the pillow and pillowcase into the other bathroom to clean them up. The case was relatively easy - I hung it from the grab bar and set the hand-held shower to a strong spray and eventually, the water dripping off was running clear.

The pillow was a bit more of a challenge, but luckily, I had a bottle of peroxide. I did the best I could - it’ll never be pure white again, but the rinse water was running clear, which I took as a good sign. There were a couple more things that needed rinsing that weren’t nearly as bad. I also needed to wash the side of is face where there was dried blood in his beard and down his neck - no telling how long it had been bleeding.

Once it stopped, he went to his recliner and I cleaned the trail of red dots from the bed to the bathroom - peroxide again. The bathroom rug was a lost cause, but I’d been planning to get rid of it anyway - it was old and the rubber backing was, well, ick. So that got tossed into the trash. Then I attacked the walls - it looked like a crime scene in there! In fact, in the morning light, I saw some spots that I missed, so today will be a bathroom cleaning day.

After all that excitement, I was wide awake, and since I’d downloaded some books yesterday, I read till about 3:30 (or was it 4:30??) and slept till 7:30, when I was wide awake again, so here I am.

We got some good rain overnight and it was 55 Ferrets when I woke, but temps will be dropping thru the day, and it’ll be below freezing before midnight. Rain will be done in a couple of hours. I’m thinking I’ll go get a haircut today since I won’t really have a chance till the new year and I’m looking pretty ratty. We’ll see how that works out. And it’s also laundry day, but that really can be done any time. Assuming I don’t fall asleep in the afternoon.

So, how’s your morning??

Happy Firday!!

Yikes! That’s scary. Any idea what caused it?

Friday onwards!

I see that meme a lot. What is it from? The Kate Hudson yelling and the pissed off white cat.

Here it is now 22 with gusty winds. Not going anywhere.

Good morning.

It’s 38°F and cloudy outside. The forecast calls for clouds and rain showers, with a daytime high of 43°F. We also escaped the high winds yesterday, although we had some pretty strong gusts after dark. The rain, however, was non-stop and heavy.

FCM, it would be pretty jarring to awake to all that! Maybe you can both get a nap in today. I’m glad your Roxy is better, too!

Nellie, I hope you can get some relief for your back soon.

From first grade through the first half of third grade, my walk to school was just under a mile, perhaps a bit longer if I cut through the woods by the lake. I walked alone, but sometimes with schoolmates. I moved from Fort Lewis to Tacoma in third grade. From the second half of third grade through sixth grade, my walk was about a mile, and the walk to junior high school was just under 1.5 miles. I did not get to take a bus to school until high school.

I didn’t make it into the old office yesterday; it was just nasty and soggy outside. I took care of some minor chores, but otherwise slothed.

I’ll need to leave the house today, though. I need to pick up a couple of items from the store and might head over to the German deli, too.

Alright, time to finish my coffee and start the day. Please take care of yourselves.

I don’t gamble, except for lottery tix. I get one ticket each for Parboil, Mega-millions, and the Hoosier Lotto. If I win something, that’s good. If I don’t, I’m a proud Hoosier taxpayer.

Ahh, the coffee is ready. Now, my brain function will be bumped up a bit. Outside, it’s 16 degrees F, and snowing. The weather-folks say it’ll get up to 22 effs later today. I’m glad it didn’t get cold yesterday; all that rain would have been knee-deep snow, and drifted.

Yikes, Moooom! There’s nothing like waking up to profuse bleeding. For future reference, do blood clean-up with cold water, as hot water will set the stain. A paste of meat tenderizer and water will “eat” the blood, but most laundry detergents now have blood-eating enzymes in them, so a pre-soak in detergent will usually solve the problem.

No, I’m not Heloise. I’m a retired factory janitor. By the way, there’s a whole different protocol for blood spills when the bleeder is someone whose medical history isn’t known. Blood-borne pathogens call for different measures.

Wow, FCM! I hope all is well.

Nellie, I hope you’re as comfortable as possible with all of that going on.

Looks like it’s… raining out there. What a surprise. Today I’ll wrap my lovely wife’s gifts and perhaps set some up to be mailed to friends post-holiday. Mostly, I’ll edit the novel. Might have another go at chestnut bread. Oh, and lentil stew.

Yes. :grinning_cat:

My seasonal sinus drip flare up, and despite Sudafed and water, everything tasted like water mucus. That and some tendonitis, and sore hips made it a slow, annoying day. They sent a bunch of people home at 6, and I was still out at 0845. So I’m having my oatmeal, and as soon as the laundry’s in the dryer, I’m hittin’ the hay.

:open_mouth: Did you sleep punch him, or did he take a bunch of Wafarin?

Yep. I’ve had to clean up a few biohazard spills in my day.

Good morning everyone. I’m too far behind to catch up with everyone but I did read everything.

Things needed to be done and family needed visited so we’ve been busy. I made potato/peanut butter pinwheels for the family dinner and everyone thought they were even better than his grandmother’s. That was pretty amazing, I’ve never tasted her cooking and don’t like peanut butter so that’s a testament to poverty cooking. Even a noob can make it taste good

Today is going to be a day of rest and recovery, he’s got a nice family but they are many and they all love to talk. Harry’s church crowd was also a nice bunch but also wanted to talk to the strangers and today we are all talked out.

Have a great Friday, I’ll check in later.

Good morning all. Slept in to about 8am thanks to a combination of exercising late and the overtime tackleball game, so immediately (I did put on clothes and ate an apple first) went to the Kroger for the Firday shopping. Had to do some planning, first filled up the gas tank to use my December points (saved $1.30/gallon) and then did my shopping, including some Chewy cards for all the pets of people that are getting other cards from me, so now I have some savings when I return from Brother’s after Xmas. Everything is put away and will try to catch up here and elsewhere (need to check my webcartoons). Temperature is about 40F and due to get to around 48F this afternoon and few clouds in the sky as the storms seem to have moved out. There are quite a few small tree limbs on my lawn so I guess the storm did have some strong winds associated with it, but I was inside during the worst of it so hardly noticed.

Flyboy, great shirt!

doggio, no coughing or headaches, but sinus congestion I have in large quantities. Dristian and a pack of kleenex tissues are my go-tos. Feel better soon.

Thank you for the confidence boost, boo fae The change is at Marseilles, which is a pretty large station but I have plenty of time to research it.

FCM, that sounds like a particularly severe nosebleed, does he get those very often? Glad you could clean things up fairly easily.

As for school hikes, two of my elementary schools (I attended 4) were only 3-4 blocks away, another was about 3/4 of a mile to the best of my recollection and the other I rode a bus to. Junior high was about a mile walk and high school about 1.5 miles, so not to bad. Was usually with my brother for those so not a solo journey.

Knots, thanks for the info on cleaning blood spots…I rather hope I never have to worry about that, but you never know…

JtC, yeah, I’m not a great group talker on my good days, so a chatty bunch like that would drive me to distraction while being highly polite and interjecting sentences now and then, trying to plot my escape…

And that’s the morning show. Be back later as the day winds on. Have a good Firday all.

Was it uphill both ways?

I did get driven to skool when I was at primary, but it was a bit too far to walk, as we were out in the countryside. Secondary- so from age 11- I was about 13 miles from skool.

As I went to skool in a different county and it wasn’t the closest one, I didn’t qualify for free transport. There was no skool bus, and the regular bus took forever, cost a ton (due to the county boundary) and was really annoyingly timed; I could either be an hour early or 15 minutes late. I normally got dropped at the train station 5 miles away, went one stop on the train and walked from there. I only got the bus on the rare occasion when the car was at the car doc or (in later years) when my parents went away for a day or so.

My brother went to a skool near mine at least, so it was just one drop off for the two of us.
That was a source of constant annoyance though, as he was always terrible at getting ready, so we’d have this hair-raising drive down tiny back roads and we’d still often miss the train, so I’d have to get the next one and be late. My skool was -understandably- skeptical when I kept putting the blame for being late on my brother who went to a different skool, honest. Once he left, I never showed up late once.

Moooom waking up in a pool of blood is never fun, I hope the day improved. I went through a phase of having nosebleeds just after waking up, but never that dramatic,

Irk is now done for the year. I did bring the irk laptop home, in case the bizarre urge to use it becomes overwhelming, but I don’t predict that being the case. I’m also plant sitting a work mate’s big monstera plant at my house and just collected it; she’s away for 3 weeks and turning the heating off. I hadn’t realised how big it was until we tried to get it in the car…

No clue. I’m pretty sure I didn’t punch him in my sleep since my right arm was farthest from his nose. It’s a mysery…

I did - and it helped to have the hand-held unit, since my hands got cold enough wringing everything out.

I’m not too worried about stains - the pillowcase is dark blue, and the peroxide did a good job on the pillow, the rug, and the corner of the white pillowcase that got hit.

He’s fine this morning, except for being exhausted. Miracle of miracles, he’s decided not to work on the boat today. But he did get a key to the paint shed so we can go there over the holidays and do what we need to do. The yard manager lurves us!

He takes NSAIDS regularly, but this has never happened before. Who knows - maybe aliens abducted him and probed his nose?? MetalMouse - this was a first, hence the mystery.

Back from my morning venture-forth. I got my hair cut, but I’m pretty sure I won’t be going back to Great Clips - my last 2 cuts were seriously meh. I’d used a couple of local, non-chain salons in the past, but both are gone, and I do not go to foo-foo spa/salons. There’s nothing about my hair worth $100 to cut it.

I ran to Lowes for a couple of things, then to Michael’s for a good deal on yarn. I’m not all that crazy about the colors, but they’re not for me and I’m sure there are Hospice patients who will love them. Once I got home, I stripped the bed, started the laundry, and had my leftover Chinese for lunch. I learned not to order anything with beef for the place in Leonardtown - it was so fatty!! I tend to prefer chicken or shrimp anyway.

Laundry and chillage, and some basement tidying - that’s my plans for the rest of today. I suppose. We’ll see.

Sounds really tasty; could you point me in the direction of the recipe?

-3F upon arising this morning. Turned all the heaters on and went back to bed for a half hour. Savory oatmeal for breakfast and then exercise class and puzzles. I’m going to put a pot of water on the stove and try to put some moisture into the air. I really hate forced-air heating. I have a couple of humidifiers, but I’ve yet to find one that actually does anything other than humidify the three foot space around the appliance.

Since all our cookies are baked, we’ve got nothing going on until Christmas eve brunch, which shouldn’t be too frantic. I’m making cornmeal pancakes and breakfast sausages, we’ll get a bucket-o-fruit from the grocery, and our guests are bringing an “egg bake”, what ever that might be. Then we’ll have a week to rest up before the NYD hosting of my kids/grands.

35ºF for the walk this morning. We’d had an inch and a half of rain yesterday, so much of the walking trails were under water. I don’t like wet socks and Chloé doesn’t like wet feet, so we took a different path.

Fang is getting a wisdom tooth out this afternoon. He was unappreciative being awakened early this morning, so he could eat and drink something before his six hour window closed.

Butter chicken for dinner tonight on the theory that if I shred the chick fine enough and he takes small enough bites, he can avoid chewing. Also, it’s one of his favorites, which he specifically asked me to make when he got home from school. Unfortunately, I want butter chicken now.

The basement is back to its proper configuration and I rollsucked up a bunch of crud. Second load of laundry is almost done in the washer, 2 more to go. I think I’ll be able to read between loads now - most of my work is done. I think. I hope.

I hope that you’re feeling better soonest!

They still make that stuff?

They still make Dristan. Many doctors discourage using it for too many days or too often because it can make congestion worse or raise blood pressure, etc., especially if you’re also taking Sudafed.

Dristan 12-Hour Nasal Spray

  • Active Ingredient: Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride.

  • Use: Relieves stuffy nose, sinus pressure, and congestion from colds, hay fever, and allergies.

  • How it Works: Shrinks swollen nasal passages to help you breathe more freely.

  • Key Warning: Do not use for more than 3 consecutive days to prevent rebound congestion, a worsening of stuffiness.

Important Considerations (for Spray)

  • Side Effects: May cause temporary burning, stinging, sneezing, or increased discharge.

  • When to Ask a Doctor: If you have heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, diabetes, or an enlarged prostate.

  • Usage: Follow directions carefully; do not exceed doses or duration.
