What's Your Favorite Ice Cream Cone? - An Inappropriate Winter MMP

Funny. My first memory of ice cream was when I was a child in Juneau, AK. There was a small ice cream shop that had butterscotch ice cream and my mother would buy me one from time to time. That flavor has been a favorite my entire life, whether it’s toffee, butterscotch or caramel.

boo fae, you and me both, on each count. He really is hell on toys of every kind, so Lambie stands alone. Ollie even destroys the super tough Kongs in a matter of weeks.

And I’m especially glad he didn’t touch the wood burner. It is elevated on a hearth and not easy for him to get to, but that wouldn’t stop him if he were really determined. I did leave him with Lambie, and that seems to have kept his attention long enough for me to facilitate restocking wood. Then last night, I caught him right under my watchful eye standing front paws on the hearth and leaning in to check out the wood burner unit. One nose touch would have done it, but I saved him from that. Never has a dog been so intent on self-harm!

Sticky buns, I hope MusicMan is soon safe and warm inside with you again!

hippie, those are very special memories. I loved hearing about them. Sharing them is how we honor those we loved who have passed on, I think. Thank you.

I stand corrected.

metal mouse, responding to your comments in the last MMP, I’m glad you got a giggle out of the AFGO reference. I expect most of us that worked in bureaucracies would. Butter pecan was my mother’s favorite ice cream, too.

Hmmm. I may have to seek this out.

cookie, you and I agree on this. I rarely eat ice cream. So many other sweets tempt me more. When I do have it, I’ll try almost any of them. But if I seek out a cone, I want the old childhood favorite – and that’s the soft serve vanilla ice cream substance in a cake (I learned something new today!) cone, dipped in that gawdawful waxy chocolate-ish stuff. Why? Who can explain the joy of recreating childhood memories? We have a Dairy Queen in the town nearest to me. I’ve gotten a cone from there exactly twice in the past 20+ years. Might have to do it again soon.

I should refrain from commenting on the irony of this view in light of your nicknames, but I can’t.

Totally agree! That place was Diabetic Hades. But oh, sooo yummy!

That… sounds ambrosial!

JtC, you have such a special mom. Smart, too!

Enjoy your time at home in the warm and cozy.

Also, thanks as ever for sharing the pics in the last MMP of your fuzzbutts. They are always charming through and through! I’ll try to get a current Ollie pic to post here, soon, if he’ll just hold still.

Not much shaking today at Chez Glow. It’s very rainy and still tropical, temps in the mid 50s. The heat pump is back on duty, so Ollie’s paws are safe. I tweaked my back a little while ago doing absolutely nothing – how does that happen? Fortunately for me, it’s a rare occurrence.

There’s a bit of paying work that needed attention, so that’s handled. No updates on Saga Project Gate yet, I’m afraid.

Almost time for Ollie’s bath, if the back issue will permit it.

Chocolate chip, chocolate chip mint, vanilla fudge…

Things went well at the eye doctor. New distance glasses for when I need to see clearly in the distance.

Apple pie French toast. Very yummy.

The wee bit of snow we had is disappearing.

I think the last time I bought it, the brand was Turkey Farm… I think…

One of the best things about going to Salsa’s is having leftovers. My pollo fiesta is just as good today as it was yesterday! And yes, I’m eating early because I didn’t have lunch and I was stahvink!!!

I got the Cetoling done - I don’t know why it’s so exhausting to paint a couple of small-ish signs. One more coat of clear tomorrow, then a little touch-up of some letters and the nav light panels will be done.

We took the hatch cover to a local glass place this morning to get a quote and it was lots less than I anticipated, plus we’ll get it back on Weds or Thurs, so YAY!!! Then we can take it to the boat and install it. Tomorrow, FCD will install the companionway doors and the name boards. Close to being done.

They’re trying to get our boat done and out the paint shed because there’s a very $$$ yacht with a very $$$ job ready to take our place. It’s not just getting its teak done, but also a full exterior paint job. The paint guy estimates it’ll run over $100K and take about 5-6 months. Their work will cost more than our boat cost us!!! But they haven’t signed a contract yet, so we’re not being rushed out. Yet.

Once we’re in the water, the engine guys will get our generator up and running, then winterize it and the engine. I doubt we’ll be doing much work except on possible warmish days. No painting till the temps are somewhere about 50° and, frankly, it’ll be too cold to do anything requiring dexterity - like any wire-related tasks. But we have the dinghy at home, so that’ll keep us busy here.

Tomorrow or the next day, Otis will get a bath. I could do Higgs myself, but this beastie is too much for me to handle alone. We’ll see when FCD is up to wrangling his house horse. Temps will be in the 50s on Weds and Thurs, so maybe those will be better bath days.

For the rest of the day, tho, I shall chill. I think I’ve earned it.

We have cuddling by cats who are both awake at the time!

Both Hersheys and Smuckers makes a chocolate hard shell ice cream topping that you can use on ice cream in the comfort of your home, drizzled over a scoop(s) in a dish, so no danger of losing it. Trader Joe’s has one too but not everyone has a Trader Joe’s near them. I usually find the hard shell topping near the Hersheys chocolate syrup and butterscotch, etc toppings on an end cap of the ice cream freezers in my grocery store.

May the hard shell force be with you! :soft_ice_cream: Cheers

One of them look much less impressed by the situation than the other.

It was glorious closed day at the museum, so I got a lot done. Still need to pull an exhibit off the floor, it is a “dam the creek” thingy, that has been leaking since I started there in Feb. But spring and summer are the busy season with field trips, the summer vacation for the kiddos. Now we’re in prime moving the travelling exhibits season, so I don’t know when it’ll get done. I find it irksome.

Right now my go-to ice cream is Trader Joe’s Cookie butter. My favorite place as a kid was called Far-Far’s (I think that’s how they spelled it) in Duxbury Ma. They had tons of rotating flavors.

I think he was getting tired of me taking pictures by that point.

The Missus put up a Christmas display: Two sparkly gold reindeer (with lights), and ‘JOY’ (with lights, and with a silhouette of the Nativity over the ‘O’). It’s very windy. The large reindeer, the ‘J’, and the ‘Y’ have been blown over.

My last town in TN had a small batch, French pot ice cream shop that made their own waffle cones. When you walked in the door, the fragrance of the. Cones coming off the press greeted you like a warm hug.

The joys of being at the western edge of the eastern time zone.

Welcome back wet one!

Perhaps he’s adopted Lambie as his lovey. (Coming from someone who’s dog has a much loved Rocky Raccoon that he frets over)

Squee!

Sis was in, sans Nelson (she had several stops), OT was here and I napped.

Mrs. L.A.'s plane is scheduled to depart at 19:20 CT/17:20 PT. So another hour. I recorded Monty Python’s Life of Brian last month. Since Wifey thinks it’s blasphemous, I’m watching it now. I’ll be at BLI at midnight, so I have seven and a half hours to watch the movie, eat dinner, get a shower, and get down there.

Italian hazelnut ice cream.

We had a typo .. behold … it was supposed to be “bottom crispy” but tired people going “BUTTTTOOOOOMMMM” is simultaneously hilarious and disturbing.

They are so cu-ute, nettie! Also same face shape and expressions, or at least it seems so to me. They could be related, maybe? Given that they’re both strays from the neighborhood, perhaps they are.

Welcome home to Mrs. flyboy. When she’s actually back, that is.

Nelson is clearly sweet, empathetic and loving, red. Ollie is… less like that. In Ollie’s world, creatures either feed him (good!) or don’t (bad!), and if they don’t (bad!), every effort should be made to rip them to bits. As a result, sadly, Ollie has no loveys.

That is indeed wonderfully hilarious, shoe. I’m still giggling!

Ollie is bathed and has engaged in the obligatory nutso zoomies that celebrate Clean Pooch Status. I have 20 more Cheater’s Burritos in the freezer for quick meals and snacks. It’s a recipe my stepmom used to make when I was an adolescent. Loved 'em then and I’ve been on a kick for them over the past couple of months. They are not authentic, but they hit the spot for a certain generic taste of Mexican. I was eating them almost daily for awhile there, but I think this new batch will last awhile longer.

Could be related, but probably not very closely, since Buddy’s known to have been neutered before we met him in early 2022, since he had the tipped ear by then. Given that Kasya’s probably only about 4 months old (based on her teeth), he probably doesn’t owe kitten support.

Any chance of sharing the recipe?

Up from naptime. It’s 29 degrees Ferret Height(-2.78 Centipedes) right now. I’m having an Old Fashioned, cheeseburger(topped with a serano pepper, onions, and pickles) and fries for dinner.Getting ready to watch Monday Night Football.
I haven’t been to B-R in years, but we have a awesome local ice Creamery: Sunni Sky’s. they have a habanero ice cream, if you enjoy freezing and burning your uvula at the same time.

I bet she supports the Judean People’s Front.

Not the worst science fail:

How to say “I am not of this Earth” without saying “I am not of this Earth”

The late Lucrezia D. Hellcatt would repeatedly set her on fire from open flames, and would lay down on stove burners as soon as they cooled from red to black.

Awwwww.

That was Gordie and Pink Pony.

Sure! But they’re embarrassingly easy.

Pork and Bean Burritos

3-4 lbs boneless pork loin, cubed (easy if your knife is sharp!)
1 30 oz can refried beans
1 10 oz can red enchilada sauce (hot, medium or mild, your choice)
7-10 oz salsa verde, to taste
shredded cheese, about 2 cups
20 flour tortillas (I like Mission whole wheat, but suit yourself)

Brown cubed pork in a bit of oil. Use a very large pan or pot, since this makes a lot.

Add refried beans, enchilada sauce and salsa verde. Reduce heat and simmer mixture, stirring frequently, until it is thick and easy to use as burrito filling. It will stick a bit, but no worries. Just scrape it up and keep stirring. Takes about an hour over low heat to get it to the right consistency.

Lay out tortillas and add a handful of shredded cheese to the lower third of each. Add a good spoonful – maybe a quarter to half a cup? – of the pork mixture on top of the cheese. Fold ends in, then roll into a burrito. I like to do 5 at a time.

Wrap each individually in foil and freeze.

When you’re ready to have one, defrost it on the counter for an hour or so, remove from foil, wrap it in a moist paper towel and nuke it for about a minute and 15 to 30 seconds, depending on your nuker. Dress it up with sour cream, salsa, tomatoes, avocadoes, etc., as you wish – or just eat it as a plain hand held. If you’re a true slob like me, the foil can act as a defacto plate.

Hope you like them!

Oh. Doggio. That’s worse than Ollie, for sure! You must have worried constantly. And I bet she had some interesting brandings…? I hope not, but my brain went there!

Howdy Y’all! Been home for a while, but needed some chill time. We had a lower than usual crowd tonight but it was still a good time. As usual, we solved all the world’s problems, but no one listens to us.

I see a hyuuuge number of posts. Right now I don’t have the brain power to read or respond, but promise to catch up soon as possible.

No, but the apartment always smelled like singed cat hair.

Good evening all. Puzzles have been solved, exercise has been performed, and Freddy’s Steakburgers provided the evening calories, so I am sitting here with the Virtual Railfan channel set to LaPlata, Missouri awaiting the Amtrak Southwest Chief in about an hour. That and several You Tubes will occupy the bulk of the evening…might even watch some tackleball if I am in the mood. 27F now and it will only drop to 21F tonight, so definitely warmer than 24 hours ago. Gym weight topday was 199.8lbs, so almost exactly where I want to be and within 2lbs of where I was at the start of the year, so I have done a pretty good job managing things weight-wise.

And over 30 missives from the Mumpers to discuss, best be about it…

FCM, yippee on the glass quote and good luck with the Otis bath.

Nut, our local Bruster’s Ice Cream closed up last year (the building is now a Lawyer’s BBQ), and the local B-R is also shut down and the only other place is about 5 miles away and more expensive, so my ice cream consumption is less than it used to be. Good luck on the Science.

To add to the discussion, I can usually handle waffle cones for two scoops or less without problems, and prefer them but not a deal-breaker if they are not available. Love all the stories though…

Sensible. Hope the packages make it through.

Bright Tree, hope Ollie and the wood burned do not have a close encounter of the oowie kind. Enjoy your snacks, mine are all store-bought, not homemade.

Nettie, great pic and Buddy looks like he’s…tolerating this interloper fairly well.

O No!!

shoe, I guess the T took time Out…

And all caught up (mostly). Think I will go watch some of the tackleball for a bit and then do my You Tube viewing until the sleepies take over (AMTRAK has arrived and departed). Take care all.
