The Diane Rehm Show
Tell Me More with Michelle Martin
Fresh Air
Car Talk
Wait Wait
The Splendid Table
I think “A Way with Words” originates here in San Diego. It’s gone through a number of host changes over the years.
Uh, pretty much whatever’s on right now- I’m a junkie. Sometimes I’ll even turn if off during sex. (slight exageration).
Says You isn’t on Michigan Radio, dammit.
My list, as I think of them-

Splendid Table
okay I’ll stop now.
Can I throw in a Wiretap, from the CBC?
I came in to ask this very question. I don’t remember the last Super Bowl I watched, but I love the haikus. Bill Littlefield and friends manage to make all kinds of sports really interesting.
I don’t listen to NPR as compulsively as I used to, but one of the local public radio stations is the only one my radio is acquainted with and I’ll listen to pretty much whatever’s on.
In addition to Only A Game, I regularly listen to at least part of Morning Edition, ATC, Marketplace, Car Talk, News and Notes, Tavis Smiley, Radio Lab (WCBE runs it periodically at 5:00 on Saturdays), Splendid Table, Wait Wait, Whad’Ya Know, Weekend Edition (both Saturday and Sunday), World Cafe, the local Jazz Show (runs 3-6 Eastern on Sundays - lots of interesting music and the hosts make it feel like they’re in your living room chatting about music), the blues show that is only available in re-runs (I keep hoping the host will come back and do new shows), and Selected Shorts. And other shows I’m forgetting. I catch Fresh Air when I can, but it’s broadcast during my work day and I can’t get my work done and listen to Fresh Air at the same time. Here’s WCBE’s Web site. I have a REALLY hard time selecting a favorite; I like some aspect of just about all of their programming.
WOSU AM used to air Bob Parlocha in the evenings but changed to BBC news in 2003 so that we could know the latest about the war at any point in the evening. I really really liked his show.
GT (who can’t pick favorites to save her life…)
I think that’s the answer to my question upthread about the Canadian guy. Is this the show hosted by Jonathan Goldstein?
Last week, his friend was calling to complain to him that he was sick because he accidently ate a chocolate bar wrapper. I know it sounds inane, because it is, but it’s also hilarious to listen to.
Yea, that’s the one.
My favorite episode is the one where a guy phones in to talk about how his TV is picking up the signal from an anonymous residential tower lobby camera. He ends up watching it for hours every day and develops a fascination with an unknown woman who lives in the building. He learns her habits and lifestyle, even getting jealous when a she has a man over, but he never learns who she is and where she lives.
There are some pretty fascinating people on that show.
I am Podcast Girl. When I found out you could listen to public radio stuff via podcast, I was enraputred!
Favorite listens:
-
Wait, Wait… Hilarious. But doesn anyone else think something’s wrong with Roy Blount, Jr.? I’m a Roy fan (read his books, etc.) but he’s been really dull and draggy a few times recently. OTOH, I adore Tom Bodett and Paula Poundstone on the show…
-
This American Life. I like Ira Glass’ voice, and love their stories. I prefer the non-fiction stuff to the fiction, though.
-
The Nature Stories Podcast . They’re just little vignettes about someone’s experience in nature, but I like them.
-
RadioLab. When they’re good, they’re absolutely amazing. But they don’t hit 100%.
-
Science Friday.
-
Bob Edwards Weekend . It’s actually an XM radio production, but it’s also broadcast on our local NPR affiliate. But when they put it on podcast, I really started listening regularly.
If I had to sit and listen to these things when they’re broadcast, I’d never hear any of them.
