You’re right — almost all of Wagner’s operas involve some degree of mythology, so they should qualify. And John Williams is no Wagner.

I love the Ring, and IMO there’s a good case for it being the single most monumental achievement by a composer, ever, since Wagner wrote not just the music, but the libretto, and even the stage directions.

But if you just take the best short selections of pure music from it, I wouldn’t put it over Grieg, nor even give it the top spot on the list of Wagner’s own music. For example, I like the overture from Tannhauser better than anything in the Ring from a purely audio perspective, although nothing beats the Ring for the total experience.

Well, there’s the aria from Lucia di Lammermoor that was played 'round a bit in The Fifth Element. Actually, pretty much everything in that movie, musically, was good.

This performance of the Doctor Who theme achieve a certain, well, let’s call it charm. (I think the pantomime horse really sells it.) Similarly, there’s Fireball XL5
