What's your favorite "story song"?

I always had a fondness for “The Pina Colada Song” (Escape).

But then I’m just an old romantic.

I don’t think anyone’s mentioned Me and Bobby McGee - I think it’s great at setting the scene - I love the line about the windshield wipers flapping time.

I also like Bohemian Rhapsody, Paradise by the Dashboard Lights, and Goodnight Saigon. Da-Doo from Little Shop of Horrors is also very cool

I heartily second “Styrofoam Plates” by Death Cab for Cutie - it’s a very literate, non-profane take on an emotionally-charged subject. I don’t know if the lead singer was abandoned by his father or not, but based on the song’s intensity I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a true story.

Other than that, I’ll add “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman (don’t think anyone’s mentioned that yet - strange) and two songs by The Weakerthans: “My Favourite Chords” and “Pamphleteer.”

some of these songs i like more as songs but aren’t storyish enough for me to nominate. That said I would like to second a few with rather strong “storyish” qualities:

I cant believe i didnt even think of red barchetta and stuart.

and dangit, Typo i was GONNA mention “Country Death Song”, dang you dang you!!! first thing that popped into mind.

as far as ones that havent been mentioned before, my favorite Heart song is Sylvan song / Dream of the Archer. But if we really wanna stretch, you could say my favorite story song is the entirety of pink floyd’s The Wall

Date Rape - Sublime

Sublime-40oz To Freedom
Date Rape/Rawhide

Let me tell you about a girl I know,
Had a drink about a hour ago
Sitting in the corner by herself,
In a bar in downtown Hell.

She heard a noise and she looked through the door
And saw a man she’d never seen before
Light skin, light blue eyes,
A double chin and a plastic smile, well

Her heart raced as he walked through the door
And took an empty seat next to her at the bar
“My brand new car is parked right outside
How’d ya like to go for a ride?”

And she said

“Wait a minute, I have to think”
He said, “That’s fine. May I please buy you a drink?”
One drink turned into 3 or 4
And they left and got into his car
And they drove away some place real far

“Now babe, the time has come
How’d ya like to have a little fun?”
And she said, “If we could only please be on our way,
I will not run”

That’s when things got out of control
She didn’t want to, he had his way
She said, “Let’s Go”
He said, “No Way!”

Come on babe it’s your lucky day
Shut your mouth, were gonna do it my way
Come on baby don’t be afraid,
If it wasn’t for date rape I’d never get laid

SOLO

He finished up, he started the car
He turned around and drove back to the bar
He said, “Now baby don’t be sad,
In my opinion you weren’t half-bad.”
She picked up a rock, threw it at the car,
Hit him in the head, now his got a big scar
Come on party people won’t you listen to me
Date Rape Stylee

The next day she went to her drawer,
Looked up her local attorney at law,
Went to the phone and filed a police report
And then she took the guy’s ass to court, well

The day he stood in front of the judge he screamed,
“She lies that little slut!”
The judge knew that he was full of shit
And he gave him 25 years
And now his heart is filled with tears

One night in jail, it was getting late
He was butt-raped by a large inmate
And he screamed,
But the guards paid no attention to his cries

That’s when things got out of control
The moral of the date rape story,
It does not pay to be drunk and horny

But that’s the way it had to be
They locked him up and threw away the key
Well, I can’t take pitty on men of his kind,
Even though he now takes it in the behind

That’s the way it had to be
They locked him up and threw away the key
Well, I can’t take pitty on men of his kind,
Even though he now takes it in the behind

Date rape!

Huh, huh, huh
Na na na na na na
Ba na na na na na
Ba na na na na na
La la la la la la

She didn’t want to,
She didn’t want to,
She didn’t want to,
She didn’t want to
Take it!

Ummmm, Homer J. First, welcome to the Boards. Second, take a look at the sticky post at the top of the Cafe Society Forum. It explicitly forbids the posting of entire lyrics.

“Ode to Billie Joe” by Bobbie Gentry
“Drivin’ Down The Road In My Car” by Tommy Walker

So who cares, rules are there to be broken

You know, Homer, I’ve heard people express that sentiment before, but I still have this nagging suspicion that rules serve a deeper purpose than that. . .

yes perhaps, but in this instance, on an internet message board about musical songs, i think we can perhaps forgive and forget. Although i find people who break rules in a way which cause harm to other people wrong, i think people who simply follow a rule and never question or challenge it, or even just bend it slighlty incredibly gutless.
For example at school when a teacher accuses me of something i didn;t do or something i dont believe to be wrong i will not simply take that abuse lying down, whereas other people just apologise and then insult them behind their backs afterwards. I find this so infuriating.

As for the original thread how about : Lola

song stories* not musical songs - i think most songs are musical - doh!

“Lola” is a great one. A slight modification of “Lola” was the theme song for my in-love state with the pseudonymous “Heather Craven” in my book from when I was a junior in high school. I’d be walking down the street singing “Hea-hea-hea-hea-hea-THERRR” and mooning over the stunning creature that sat behind me in Trigonometry. Other theme songs for girls I used to love from afar:

“Shining Star” by the Commodores (not Earth, Wind & Fire)
“Whenever I See Your Smiling Face” by James Taylor

All the children sing

Hey Bungalow Bill
What did you kill
Bungalow Bill

Those who have ever lost a spouse, particularly after a tough illness, will find some comfort in Garth Brooks’ The Dance .

Still loving you, chiya.

The Board cares.
