Do you have a great grand idea rolling around in your head? Something that’s just guaranteed to make you a millionaire if you could just figure out how to get it to market? I do!
The self-closing washing machine lid! I swear on all that is good and holy - I leave my washing machine open overnight or all day while I’m at work at least once a week. Drives me batty. I know everything just got a really good soak, but sometimes I’m working with a time frame so I need whatever is in there to be clean and dry by a certain time and then I just go and forget to close the damned thing and then I’m just stuck.
A washer/dryer combo with some means of transferring the load from the washer to the dryer mechanically; so the user need only load the washer, then come back in a few hours to find a dryer full of dry clothes.
Also, I have a fantastic idea for a magic illusion; I have no idea how to make it work (all I have is the set-up and the presentation). If there are any magicians on the SDMB who want to talk to me about it, PM me. I’ll give you the rights to the illusion for free; my payment will be seeing it performed.
A public transportation network consisting of computer guided steam power trebuchets that shoot spherical transportation modules (sits 5 comfortably) over 3 miles to giant high tech nets, ready to be loaded into the next trebuchets.
A journey Maastricht Amsterdam would take just 10 shots and 20 minutes.
Years ago when I first started riding a motorcycle I went to Daytona for the rally. As most people know bikers wave at each other for the most part. On my way in to Daytona, a hundred miles away or so, I noticed that people had stopped waving. I figured out why a bit later when there were way too many bikes on the road.
My invention, should you really want to steal it, is a hand that you attach to the handle bar so that you can ‘wave’ without having to actually wave. I’m not sure how well this would sell though.
You do know that they have combination washer-dryers that have no need to transfer the load, right? That is, they wash and dry in the same barrel or tub.
I’ve had the pleasure of using a few of them, and 100% of them suck!
Ok, here’s my invention. Anyone want to take it and run with it, just give me half your profits.
Have you ever seen people (mostly women) at a public beach cover themselves with a towel and change to a bathing suit under it? The only trouble is that it is hard to change back, especially if the suit is wet. Well my idea is an “insta-tent”. Imagine a large (say 6’) square of terrycloth. Along one edge a piece of memory wire that you can make into a circle with a hook to keep it closed. Along the two edges adjacent to that are the two halves of a zipper that can be zipped. Some provision (this needs development) for supporting the resultant tent on your shoulders while you change. When you unzip and unhook, it springs to a flat position and becomes a beach blanket. Go for it, Staggerlee.
This sounds similar to my “giant floating bubbles” transportation plan. You’ll get in the bubble (equipped with a comfy seat & laptop tray; larger “couch” versions available), program your destination into the nav computer (probably using google maps), and be floated to your destination using some sort of space-age technology/ magic. The bubbles will have anti-collision detectors, but the worst collisions will result in nothing more than light jostling.
Someone pretty please make this a reality. I don’t even need credit, I am just freaking tired of driving and traffic and getting lost and focusing on the road and all of that gross stuff.
Here are mine - you are all welcome to them as I’m never gonna do f*ck-all about them.

[li]Motorized self-balancing wheeled suitcase with remote sensor, so it always stays within 3 feet of you. No more dragging your suitcase through the airport. Just carry the “home” fob in your pocket and the suitcase whizzes along behind you! Also, it will make a sound like the flying cars in the Jetsons. There are obvious engineering problems that have to be solved: unladen weight, laden weight, balance, righting. I figure it could leverage some of the “Segway” technology.[/li][li]Online charity site - like a mutual fund site where you can build a fund of charities you want to donate to. You setup auto-deduction from your checking account or paycheck, etc., and it allocates out to the various charities in your fund based on your instructions. You can research charities on the site, and people can give ratings/feedback on charities. The site provides you with an annual statement for tax purposes. Part of the deal is that in order for a charity to be included in the site, they have to agree not to bombard you with additional solicitations through phone calls and mailings. The million dollar idea part is that the charities pay the site a commission based on what they collect, just like professional charity fundraisers get now.[/li][/ol]
