What's your most esoteric or arcane hobby or interest?

I do stained glass too. Here are a couple things I’m working on right now. Fairiemoon and Max, my old friend
And I read Tarot I have only one deck at present, but I had several in the past. I haven’t read for anyone in a while, though.

This fall, I’m taking an Intro to ECE course that involves playing with legos.

Hooray for college!

As for me, I’m into some things that may be arcane or not, depending on where asked. I absolutely love playing my ukulele, but for this board, that isn’t all that strange or interesting. I also have a small collection of objects I’ve collected from off the ground, but that isn’t interesting, either. For this board, I’m basically vanilla.

I forgot about tarot decks (or didn’t think they were that strange).

I used to collect them, too (although that was an artifact of my 20s; I haven’t bought one in over ten years). shamrock227 is right: there’s some beautiful artwork in those.

For collectors: have you seen the Voyager Tarot? It’s one of my favorite decks, and I have about 30.

Right now, I’m on a cookbook collection vendetta: they must be locally produced by small communities. I find them fascinating profiles of rural life. I currently have about half a dozen from Midwest America, but I’m looking for more–the older, the better. Books from the British Isles would be fantastic, if anyone has some they would like to get rid of for cheap.

I also have (but cannot play currently, due to repair needs on the instrument’s part, and talent needs on MY part) a harp-guitar.

I collect broken espresso cups. I don’t drink coffee but I always have to take broken espresso cups home with me.

I like dumpster diving. I’ve found some pretty amazing stuff while dumpster diving including most of my furniture. It’s amazing what people throw out. Along the same lines, I like going places that I’m not supposed to be, yet I don’t break any laws to get there. For example, on the roof of a public building. This was a lot more fun in Ohio where there were older buildings and you could find yourself in long forgotten attics full of fascinating stuff.

I like dressing up in outfits and trying to make myself look as different as possible. I used to be a cosplayer, but I dropped out of that. Now I just dress up for a convention that I go to or when I go clubbing. I also like playing with makeup for some of the same reasons.

I love studying a wide variety of subjects. In the past year, I’ve gotten heavily into demonology and angelology. A long held interest of mine is sexuality. I’ve read all the books in 3 university’s libraries (not a small task, as one library had an entire row on the subject) on sex and I’ve taken classes on the subject. I used to be a Human Sexuality major before I realized it was better to get a more respectable major and then study sexuality within whatever field I am into. Some people are unnerved by my interest in serial killers, but I’ve known too many people also interested in the subject for me to consider it arcane.

I know I’m forgetting things…

Thanks! You’re in a bit of luck; the US is the cheapest place to get Lego. They’re still trying to get a fair slice of the american toy market, and they have to compete with clone brands like megabloks. Maybe you should check out wal-mart, they are known to dump old sets at 50% or even 75% off. Otherwise, there’s plenty of second-hand stuff available on ebay and garage sales.

I collect photographs of lost gloves. My blog is up and running again now, but I haven’t restored the archive from MyBlogSite yet.

I have trouble sticking with any hobby or pastime; in the past, I’ve taken up things like archery or photography, then they’ve been elbowed out by new interests; my loft space is filled with equipment and materials from activities I will probably never find time to resume.
At any one time, I also have a dozen or so projects or inventions in mind, most of which will never see the light of day.

That’s why I can’t quite understand those folks who post in ‘Would you like to be immortal?’ threads, saying “naah, 100 years is enough”. No, it isn’t. OK, true immortality might suck, but I can’t see myself getting bored of it before at least twenty lifetimes; probably much much more.

And I forgot to include my sig (which has a link to my lost gloves project).

Nothing too esoteric, but folks have occasionally remarked that they think it wierd that I maintain several aquaria in which I am more interested in the plants than the fish.

You should come to my dumpster. I am moving at the end of the month, and I am throwing out tons of stuff. Anything worthwhile I am just leaving near the dumpster. This weekend I think I got rid of * 10 bags* of assorted accumulated crap. The only good thing about moving.

Me too. I prefer to think of them as mini-biographies. The Telegraph has the best ones.

(Have you written yours yet? I have mine ready to go.)

Medieval genealogy. Or just weird medieval stuff in general – besides my Personal Appearances of Medieval People project, I’m also working on an odd little mini-project pinpointing the approximate dates and locations of the conceptions of the children of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Greywolf73, you should transcribe those diaries and submit them to the relevent USgenweb Project! They could be valuable genealogical resources.

I keep unusual running lists of things.

I collect Indiana Jones items. From action figures, to books, to anything else I’ve seen. I’ve got three full curios, and I need probably two or three more at least. I have proofs of the original action figures, they are what the boxes and card backs will look like before they go into production. I’ve got so much stuff I don’t know what to do with it all. I think I need to start saving money now for when the next movie comes out so that I have enough to buy everything.

I love your fairy! Do you have a saw? If not I am doubly impressed because some of those are really tough cuts to do by hand…
Dijon Warlock, pop me an email with your mailing address. I have a cookbook from a number of years back from a group in Ocean County, NJ (have family down there). I’d be glad to send it to you for your collection.

Hunting with hounds. Beagling, Foxhunting ('chasing I spose)…competed in the junior divisions in Steeplechase meets.

Many people save souvenir matchcovers, but how many people do you know who actively collect those little souvenirs? Well, the hobby’s flagship organization is the Rathkamp Matchcover Society, which is holding its annual convention next week. My father is the co-chairman of that convention, and as one of the “big shots” in the hobby, he’d likely be featured about as prominently in a film about phillumeny (the formal name) as Will Shortz and Merl Reagle are in Wordplay.

I run a fansite for Tokyo Disney Resort, which is comprised of Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea.

I visit 4-5 times a month, attend all the special events and shows, write up trip reports, take video and photographs of everything in the Parks. I provide all these for download on my English-language website for free.

Most of my friends have no idea I do this. Most of them would definitely say it was “odd.”

I collect decks of used cards from casinos - but only casinos I’ve been to, preferably actually played a hand. Of course, people buy them for me, so I get decks from places I’ve never been. I try to get both colors, if available.

I’m up to close to 175 decks (it’s easy to hit a ton of casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City) from 4 countries on three continents. I understand Goa now has a floating casino, so if they sell their retired decks, I’ll add a country and continent soon.

I bredd and raise North American Silk Moths; the big, beautiful moths of summer that are so very rarely seen. Cynthia moths, Luna moths, Cecropia, Polyphemus, etc. I keep some eggs from each feamle before releasing her and raise the caterpillars to adults and repeat. Just my way of beautifying the summer nights!

I too bounce from hobby to hobby but I usually circle back to the ones I really like. My list of semi odd things I do or have done in the past:

Sport Rocketry
Archery
Computer case modding
Mason Bee keeping
making solar powered gadgets
