I just wanted to add that in the mid 19th century Karl Marx correctly predicted that the first communist revolution would be in Russia. His reason? It was the last feudal and most primitive of all European countries.

Do you have a cite for this? Because it contradicts everything I’ve learned over the last fifty years.

Marx expected the Revolution to start in Britain or Germany because they were the most industrially advanced countries of the time and had the largest proletariats. Russia was the country he least expected to have a revolution precisely because it was so underdeveloped and backward.

This exchange made me buy the book again, to check my memory. I’ve been re-reading it, and it is as good as I remember it.

First - it’s true that many, including Marx, thought that the revolution would start in England, precisely because the industrialisation started there. He was constantly exasperated though; any time something seemed to stir ‘the proletariat’ in continental Europe, the workers in England shrugged and moved on. Marx realised, fairly early, that the English working man was more interested in making money than in a revolution.

Now, for my claim. My memory was not exact, but close enough.
Marx wrote, in a letter (1 September 1970) to Friedrich Adolph Sorger, organiser of the the American International the following:

Anyway, there’s nothing surprising that Marx would predict an eventual social revolution in Russia - he predicted that a social revolution would eventually occur everywhere.
