What's your opinion on these issues?

  1. Do you think the world is overpopulated?
    a. Not even close.
    b. Not really.
    c. Maybe.
    d. Yeah, kinda.
    e. Definitely.
    f. Indifferent

  2. An unmarried couple you know have engaged in sexual relations, assuming you know about it. What do you think?
    a. That’s fine. As long as they love each other (or not), who cares?
    b. So long as they’re very committed and she doesn’t get pregnant.
    c. Concerned, but none of my business.
    d. Irritated. Sex is too risky. What if they split up?
    e. Furious. How could they do that? Don’t they know premarital sex is a sin?
    f. Indifferent.

  3. This may only apply to Americans. Let’s say you’re on a bus. You notice that everything written in English has a Spanish translation right next to it. How do you feel?
    a. Great! If someone moves here from Mexico or something, that person won’t be too confused.
    b. Eh, there are a lot of Hispanic immigrants so why not?
    c. I’ve learned to live with it.
    d. If they have Spanish translations, then why not French, German, Italian, etc.
    e. If they want to survive in this country, they should learn the damn language.
    f. Indifferent.

  4. You have two little cousins, ages three and one. Somehow, you’ve learned your aunt bathes them in the tub together. You think:
    a. Wonderful! All kids should be in this situation! It’s so adorable!
    b. They’re too young to remember it, so she should take advantage of it.
    c. Even if my opinion here was invited, I wouldn’t be sure which way to go.
    d. I wish people wouldn’t do that. Where’s the individuality? My poor cousins.
    e. Little kids or not. The whole thing is still perverted.
    f. Indifferent.

  5. The statewide driving age is moving from 16 to 18. Your thoughts?
    a. Good. With no immature teens the roads are safer.
    b. Those kids have too many rights. I’m happy about this.
    c. Doesn’t affect me.
    d. Notice the people this law affects are too young to vote and thus can’t do anything about it.
    e. Too big a generalization. Not all teens are bad drivers. Also, whenever you start driving you’ll be inexperienced. Then the legal driving age will be 21!
    f. Indifferent.

  6. You’ve learned a store you’re thinking of shopping at has all of their products made by slave children in Haiti, the Philippines, and other places. Would you shop there?
    a. Of course. I don’t know or care about a bunch of foreign kids.
    b. Yes. While the other bothers me, they have great prices.
    c. No idea.
    d. No. Child labor is wrong, so these people aren’t getting my money!
    e. Shop there? I’ll find ways to have those bastards shut down!
    f. Indifferent.

  7. What do you think of corporal punishment?
    a. It’s perfect. Physical pain tells all.

    c. I don’t know.
    d. It’s wrong and humiliating. It causes more problems than it solves.
    e. It can destroy parent/child relationships. That child won’t remember or care why he got hit. All he cares about is “You hurt me!”
    f. Indifferent.

  8. What best describes your opinion of the US government?
    a. It’s great. Everybody’s free. Their constitution is the longest running document in the world.
    b. They have many major flaws, but it’s one of the best in the world.
    c. They sometimes suck. They sometimes don’t.
    d. They take too much advantage of their power. Too many greedy bastards run it.
    e. It doesn’t seem like any other country in the world likes the USA, and that’s understandable. They steal from other countries, they bully them, and I hope something changes all that.
    f. Indifferent.

  9. You live in a town that was once filled with beautiful trees and a few lakes. Now it has been removed for housing. The only piece of woods left is right near your neighborhood and you like taking walks there. Now it may be removed for a shopping center. What would you do?
    a. Ignore it. A shopping center is always useful in a growing economy.
    b. What can I do? I can’t stop them even if I wanted to. Maybe I’ll just move.
    c. Woods. Shopping Center. Who cares? I won’t do anything.
    d. Mildly complain. I like those woods. At least some natural beauty is left.
    e. Why the hell do we need a new shopping center? We’ve got, like, six already. I’m going to do anything I can to save the woods I like so much.
    f. Indifferent.

  10. Some Simpsons fans have posted websites containing sound clips, video clips, episode guides, and photos from the show. FOX has had many of them shut down. Where do you stand on this? (It doesn’t have to be the Simpsons. Any show would do here.)
    a. If those people are Simpsons fans, why are they stealing from it? They deserve shut down.
    b. If FOX believes it’s a threat, then shut those sites down, or at least whatever is being illegally distributed.
    c. I like unofficial websites for The Simpsons, but maybe they are stealing from FOX.
    d. Those websites are simply promoting The Simpsons. They’re doing no harm.
    e. So what if I’ve downloaded a bunch of sound clips and stuff off the unofficial sites. I like the Simpsons and I’ll still watch the show!
    f. Indifferent.

  11. A group of vegetarian activists is protesting in front of a meat shop. This makes you think about vegetarians and their cause. What are those thoughts?

    b. Eating meat is wrong but I wouldn’t protest.
    c. Eating meat is easier when you don’t think about where it came from.
    d. We’re omnivores. We need to eat both plant and animal. Farms grow livestock so we can eat them.
    e. What kind of screwball is against eating meat? If I wasn’t supposed to eat that cow, the cow shouldn’t have been tasty!
    f. Indifferent.

  12. You’re standing in line for groceries, and you glance at the magazines by the checkout counter. Redbook is featuring a cover story about the McCaughey septuplets. You think:
    a. Great! I want to know everything about them! Septuplets! What a miracle! I’ll buy the magazine.
    b. This is the one chance this family may have to be in the spotlight. I’m happy for them.
    c. If it’s important to people, magazines should still cover it.
    d. Why do I care about seven toddlers I don’t even know? I’m tired of hearing about it.
    e. Some hillbilly family in Iowa is getting free stuff and constant attention just because some woman had seven kids at one time. It sickens me!
    f. Indifferent.

  13. Another US school shooting has taken place. Now dozens of accusations such as “kids today have too much freedom” and “kids have no morals” have gone out. Where do you stand on this?
    a. Those accusations are correct. Kids should have almost no freedom whatsoever.
    b. More kids are causing trouble. Something needs to be done to stop this.
    c. Something must be done, but what? Would it work?
    d. Unfortunately, it’s the troublemakers that make it hard for the good ones. Those troublemakers should be punished severely.
    e. The accusations are pure ageism. Just because a few members of an age group did something wrong, all others shouldn’t be criticized.
    f. Indifferent.

  14. A law official has offered you $4000 to rat on your friends if they do anything illegal. Would you accept the offer?
    a. Yes! I could use $4000. Friends come and go anyway.
    b. Yes. No friends of mine should be breaking the law.
    c. Raise it to $10000 and we’ll talk.
    d. No. My friends rely on me. Friendship is priceless.
    e. No! No amount of money can make me squeal on my friends so those law officials can f**k off!
    f. Indifferent.

    b. If it’s what they think is best, it’s a good idea.
    c. It’s no sweat off my back.
    d. The cartoon has been around for like 30 years. Whatever is bad now has always been there anyway.
    e. Don’t screw with the classics! Come on! It’s Warner Bros.!
    f. Indifferent.

  16. A couple you know has a five-year-old son. One day, you’re talking with them and they mention they’ve decided not to have any more children. What do you think?
    a. Great! Nothing wrong with an only child, despite what people say. Environment-safe, too!
    b. Yeah, that’s good. But I worry about either the boy being lonely or others criticizing him for having no siblings.
    c. Whatever number of children they want and can support, I’m happy.
    d. What? That’s it? How lazy! They should at least have a second to be more complete!
    e. How ridiculous! That boy will grow up selfish and unable to deal with society, just because they won’t make themselves real parents by having another baby. More kids, the better!
    f. Indifferent.

  17. Your 45-year-old uncle just received his undergraduate degree at the local state college after working for it for over 25 years. What do you think?
    a. I’m very proud of him! Even through his other obligations, he has managed to complete this!
    b. He could have finished earlier, but it’s nice he finished it to begin with.
    c. Doesn’t matter how long it takes.
    d. Sure, he finished, but it wouldn’t have taken so long if he didn’t screw up in the very beginning!
    e. 45? What can you do with a degree at 45? Nothing! Why did he even waste his time? He’s got a job already anyway!
    f. Indifferent.

  18. There are a lot of advertisements on TV for parental control over a child’s use of the Internet. This is to “safeguard your children.” Is it really?
    a. Of course! There are too many dangerous things a young child can see and do on the Internet! Hell, keep them off it entirely!
    b. Yeah. There’s a lot of porno sites and areas expecting personal information. Control is necessary.
    c. At least they’re trying.
    d. No. Well, hopefully the child would know better than to give personal info anyway. Just block porno, if anything.
    e. Safe from what? Bad language which they probably hear all the time anyway? Natural, naked human bodies doing weird, less natural stuff? It’s in a computer! It can’t hurt you!
    f. Indifferent.

  19. The daughter of a well respected and very good math teacher is failing math! Is this correlated with her father’s teaching skills?
    a. Definitely. This is serious. In fact, his students should try to transfer to another class if possible! He should lose his job!
    b. Yes. What kind of study skills can he enforce on his own students when he can’t even get them right with his daughter?
    c. If she just picks up her grades, there would be no more problem.
    d. No. He shouldn’t be punished for his daughter’s flaws or vice versa. Besides, just give her a chance to ask him for help.
    e. Who found out she was failing math? How was her math grade brought out into the open? There are universities getting sued for that, you know!
    f. Indifferent.

  20. A 15-year-old girl was dating a 19-year-old guy. She got pregnant. Since the two love each other, her parents have decided to let them get married so they can both be there for the child. Is this okay?
    a. Of course! They love each other. Her parents consented. It’s okay.
    b. Yes. I just hope the two can maintain themselves and their coming child, and the girl can continue her education.
    c. If it’s best.
    d. No. What the hell is she doing going out with a 19-year-old? Anything resulting from that is wrong! He shouldn’t be dating young girls!
    e. What! That’s statutory rape! I hope the police arrest him, put him in prison, and his inmates kill him! He deserves it!
    f. Indifferent.

wow, you really took that caption about polling to the extreme.

That you would right so much forces me to respond…

1.b. Not really.
2. a. That’s fine. As long as they love each other (or not), who cares?

  1. b. Eh, there are a lot of Hispanic immigrants so why not?

  2. b. They’re too young to remember it, so she should take advantage of it.

  3. e. Too big a generalization. Not all teens are bad drivers. Also, whenever you start driving you’ll be inexperienced. Then the legal driving age will be 21!

  4. f. Indifferent.

  5. b. If it’s a young child who hits people and does other bad stuff, it’s good.
won’t remember or care why he got hit. All he cares about

Dead serious here! Some little punks I know could seriously use a beating!

  1. b. They have SOME major flaws, but it’s one of the best in the world.

9.e. Why the hell do we need a new shopping center? We’ve got, like, six already. I’m going to do anything I can to save the woods I like so much.

  1. d. Those websites are simply promoting The Simpsons. They’re doing no harm.

  2. A group of vegetarian activists is protesting in front of a meat shop. This makes you think about vegetarians and their cause. What are those thoughts?

d. We’re omnivores. We need to eat both plant and animal. Farms grow livestock so we can eat them. Vegetarians: Read origin of species and get back to me.

  1. e. Some hillbilly family in Iowa is getting free stuff and constant attention just because some woman had seven kids at one time. It sickens me!

  2. e. The accusations are pure ageism. Just because a few members of an age group did something wrong, all others shouldn’t be criticized.
Think about it: People under eighteen represent at most 25% of the population, and account for fewer than 150 killings a year. The other 75% account for over 1000 yearly…why are the kids the ones with problems?

14e. No! No amount of money can make me squeal on my friends so those law officials can f**k off!
15. g who’re you to say what’s right or wrong?

  1. c. Whatever number of children they want and can support, I’m happy.

17.a. I’m very proud of him! Even through his other obligations, he has managed to complete this!
(Please ignore the fact that my slightly more than 45 year old uncle is a brilliant and very accomplished musician with many degrees…)
18.e. Safe from what? Bad language which they probably hear all the time anyway? Natural, naked human bodies doing weird, less natural stuff? It’s in a computer! It can’t hurt you!

  1. d. No. He shouldn’t be punished for his daughter’s flaws or vice versa. Besides, just give her a chance to ask him for help.

  2. b. Yes. I just hope the two can maintain themselves and their coming child, and the girl can continue her education.
Finally! That took way too long! and I didnt’ even write it!

This one’s either gonna die fast, or become the longest thread in SDMB history.

I dunno, he left a lot, too. Several of these have been hammered at length in the Great Debates, particularly numbers 1, 3, 7, 8 (in one form or another), 9, 10, 11, 13, 15, 16, and 20.

Have fun, we’ll see you around Christmas.

My opinion is that you have way too much free time on your hands.

  1. e. Definitely.

  2. a. That’s fine. As long as they love each other (or not), who cares?

  3. a. Great! If someone moves here from Mexico or something, that person won’t be too confused.

  4. f. Indifferent.

  5. g. I’m not indifferent, but I just honestly don’t know.

  6. d. No. Child labor is wrong, so these people aren’t getting my money!

  7. b. If it’s a young child who hits people and does other bad stuff, it’s good.

  8. c. They sometimes suck. They sometimes don’t. (with a little bit of e mixed in for good measure)

  9. e. Why the hell do we need a new shopping center? We’ve got, like, six already. I’m going to do anything I can to save the woods I like so much.

  10. e. So what if I’ve downloaded a bunch of sound clips and stuff off the unofficial sites. I like the Simpsons and I’ll still watch the show!

  11. c. Eating meat is easier when you don’t think about where it came from.

  12. d. Why do I care about seven toddlers I don’t even know? I’m tired of hearing about it.

  13. b. More kids are causing trouble. Something needs to be done to stop this.

  14. e. No! No amount of money can make me squeal on my friends so those law officials can f**k off! Although I think the cop would deserve it if I lied and cheated him out of the $$ without reporting anything.

  15. e. Don’t screw with the classics! Come on! It’s Warner Bros.!

  16. a. Great! Nothing wrong with an only child, despite what people say. Environment-safe, too!

  17. d. Sure, he finished, but it wouldn’t have taken so long if he didn’t screw up in the very beginning!

  18. h. Parents ought to spend more time with their kids anyway, and if they want their kids to use the internet they should be right there with the kid, instead of using the “internet as nanny” excuse…

  19. i. impossible to determine.

  20. d. No. What the hell is she doing going out with a 19-year-old? Anything resulting from that is wrong! He shouldn’t be dating young girls!

So is this just a poll or is it going to turn into an impossibly long debate about all these issues?

1-c, 2-a, 3-b, 4-f, 5-that makes two more years during which these poor kids will be held hostage by the idiocy of sprawl, 6-e, 7-d, 8-d and e, 9-I’d have moved long ago when the sprawl first started, 10-e, 11-d, 12-f, 13-e, 14-if I were truly offended by their crime I’d report them anyway, otheriwse d, 15-f, 16-f, 17-a, 18-parental involvement is a much better safeguard than buggy, biased software, 19-maybe, but that’s for a child psychologist to decide, 20-a young couple embarks together on a future paved with stupidity.

D.

A or F–which are the same thing as far as I’m concerned.
Why should anyone else care? Honestly, I want a monogamous relationship, but I have no ethical problems with two people having an open marriage, where both parties openly “swing”. I WOULD NOT want this for myself, but as long as there’s no deception, it wouldn’t bother me if two of my friends had an open marriage (Deception WOULD bother me, and potentially cause an ethically tricky situation.)

B or D. I don’t have a problem with making things easier on people who don’t speak English, but I’m not sure there should be an OBLIGATION to do so.

B. Come on. I don’t think it’s going to cause them sexual issues, or issues re their individuality. If I felt it would, then D. But at one and three? I don’t think so.

C, but the issues raised in D and E are good ones. I could see making the test tougher on younger kids (ie, you need a higher score to pass.

B. Maybe D if I felt strongly enough. But I’m not sure how much of a quantitative or qualitative hit I’d take.
On a related note, I’ve pretty much stopped eating veal after hearing about the conditions the animals are raised in. Sucks because I do like veal, but I can’t eat it without feeling incredibly guilty.

B. My dad spanked me. If I have any faults, it’s certainly not because he or my mom did. There’s a difference between corporal punishment and abuse.

B. One of the easier choices for me in this post.

B. I do think some lands should be set aside for nature.

D. if the sites don’t make a profit. B otherwise.

D. And I have a real problem with someone trying to FORCE their beliefs on me.

C. as long as there’s no invasion of privacy. For me personally, D (though I’m not tired of hearing about it, just indifferent about it.)

D.

D. But I might turn them in if their acts are reprehensible (as distinct from “merely” illegal) enough or I felt they were putting an innocent in danger. And in those circumstances, I’d probably take the money but it wouldn’t be my motive. I MIGHT then donate it.

D. I have a real problem with some board’s opinion of “unsuitable”.

C. or F. Not my business.

A or C. Not that it’s my business.

C. Tough question.

D. I have a problem with the daughter’s problems being used against the teacher’s perceived performance, unless he was teaching her, which opens up other issues.

A, B, or C.

I skipped a few that didn’t really concern me.

**

  1. Do you think the world is overpopulated?

    e. Definitely.

**
6. You’ve learned a store you’re thinking of shopping at has all of their products made by slave children in Haiti, the Philippines, and other places. Would you shop there?
**
e. Shop there? I’ll find ways to have those bastards shut

That goes for the slave part. I’m not generally against child labor since there usually isn’t any real choice for those kids.

**
7. What do you think of corporal punishment?
**
d. It’s wrong and humiliating. It causes more problems than it solves.

I doubt it causes major damage to the child/parent relationship in most cases but I’m against it on principle. I find the whole idea that someone should be allowed to hit another person just because they aren’t old enough to hit back offensive.

I have no problem with veganism. I just don’t like getting it shoved down my throat, so to speak. I’d probably buy some meat just for the hell of it.

**
12. You’re standing in line for groceries, and you glance at the magazines by the checkout counter. Redbook is featuring a cover story about the McCaughey septuplets. You think:**

d. Why do I care about seven toddlers I don’t even know? I’m tired of hearing about it.

I don’t like the method of artificial insemination that causes most (all?) 6+ baby births. As for specific families, who cares how many diapers they go through every day? Not me.

**
13. Another US school shooting has taken place. Now dozens of accusations such as “kids today have too much freedom” and “kids have no morals” have gone out. Where do you stand on this?

b. Yes. I just hope the two can maintain themselves and their coming child, and the girl can continue her education.

1. Do you think the world is overpopulated?

D. And if things keep going the way they’re going now, it’ll only get worse.

2. An unmarried couple you know have engaged in sexual relations, assuming you know about it. What do you think?

A. Christ, I’ve been part of that equation, in one way or another, for the past seven years. Any other answer and I’d be a hypocrite.

3. This may only apply to Americans. Let’s say you’re on a bus. You notice that everything written in English has a Spanish translation right next to it. How do you feel?

B. If there are a lot of Hispanic immigrants, make things easier for them. Hell, it helps, when learning a language, to see translations of things right next to one another. If there are not a lot of Hispanic immigrants, though, I’d wonder why they didn’t have everything in several languages, or just in English.

4. You have two little cousins, ages three and one. Somehow, you’ve learned your aunt bathes them in the tub together. You think:

A. Kids that young LIKE to bathe together.

5. The statewide driving age is moving from 16 to 18. Your thoughts?

C. I don’t drive right now, and I’m over 18.

6. You’ve learned a store you’re thinking of shopping at has all of their products made by slave children in Haiti, the Philippines, and other places. Would you shop there?

E. Slave labor? Christ, I don’t even like the idea of “voluntary” child labor, much less forced.

7. What do you think of corporal punishment?

G (making up a response entirely). It’s useful in very dire situations. If a kid is getting ready to stick a fork in a light socket, saying “No” isn’t quite as good as saying “No” and smacking them on the hand. I wouldn’t spank a kid for every little transgression, but sometimes it’s the only way they’ll listen.

**8. What best describes your opinion of the US government? **

C. That’s basically the case with all democracies.

9. You live in a town that was once filled with beautiful trees and a few lakes. Now it has been removed for housing. The only piece of woods left is right near your neighborhood and you like taking walks there. Now it may be removed for a shopping center. What would you do?

E. If that fails, I’d do another G, and move.

10. Some Simpsons fans have posted websites containing sound clips, video clips, episode guides, and photos from the show. FOX has had many of them shut down. Where do you stand on this?

D. Some of these websites are doing the show a SERVICE, and for free, no less.

11. A group of vegetarian activists is protesting in front of a meat shop. This makes you think about vegetarians and their cause. What are those thoughts?

Something between D and E.

12. You’re standing in line for groceries, and you glance at the magazines by the checkout counter. Redbook is featuring a cover story about the McCaughey septuplets. You think:

E. Not to mention the fact that she wouldn’t have a selective abortion because having 7 babies was somehow “God’s will,” yet she was using fertility drugs, which means that technically it was God’s will that she didn’t have any babies at all. And now her kids have her to thank for the fact that they’re going to suffer health problems and be in the public eye for their entire lives.

13. Another US school shooting has taken place. Now dozens of accusations such as “kids today have too much freedom” and “kids have no morals” have gone out. Where do you stand on this?

Somewhere between C and D.

14. A law official has offered you $4000 to rat on your friends if they do anything illegal. Would you accept the offer?

G. I’d wonder what the fuck was going on, because none of my friends are the criminal type.

15. A classic Warner Bros. cartoon is being banned because its content is a little unsuitable for a general audience. How do you feel?

E. Screw that PC bullshit. You don’t like it? Don’t fucking watch it.

16. A couple you know has a five-year-old son. One day, you’re talking with them and they mention they’ve decided not to have any more children. What do you think?

C. I’m an only child, and I know people with siblings. Both have their benefits and drawbacks.

17. Your 45-year-old uncle just received his undergraduate degree at the local state college after working for it for over 25 years. What do you think?

A. Stuff like that is an inspiration for everyone to better themselves, no matter how much time or work it takes.

18. There are a lot of advertisements on TV for parental control over a child’s use of the Internet. This is to “safeguard your children.” Is it really?

B. Parents should keep an eye out as to what their kids are accessing on the internet. There’s just too much dangerous stuff out there not to. And I’m not talking porno–if I found out one day that my fifteen-year-old son was looking at pornography on the internet, I’d first check to make sure there was no really perverse stuff (no rape fantasies, violence, pedophilia, etc.), and if not, I’d probably just let him be. I know I looked at pornography when I was a teenager–it’s a natural part of growing up. However, I don’t want my kid looking up stuff on how to build bombs.

19. The daughter of a well respected and very good math teacher is failing math! Is this correlated with her father’s teaching skills?

D. I’m not as good as my parents are at some things, and they’re not as good as I am at some things. My parents should not be blamed for my shortcomings.

20. A 15-year-old girl was dating a 19-year-old guy. She got pregnant. Since the two love each other, her parents have decided to let them get married so they can both be there for the child. Is this okay?

C. My mother, pregnant with me at 15, did NOT marry my 21-year-old father, even though she had an engagement ring and they were shopping around for a place together. Thanks to quite a bit of family support, she graduated high school, collge, and medical school while raising me, married my stepfather (who she met when I was 3 years old) and is now much better off than she would have been had she married my father. She was lucky.

1. Do you think the world is overpopulated?
a. Not even close.
b. Not really.
c. Maybe.
d. Yeah, kinda.
e. Definitely.
f. Indifferent

[ul]
I was once in the not really camp, but now I’m leaning to C. or maybe D. But the one thing I have learned, things aren’t as simple as they appear. overcrowding is a huge problem in poor African and Asian countries like India, but some places, like Japan, have what could be called an underpopulation problem. There was an interesting article I saw at WorldNet Daily. Even though it is filled with horrendous half truths (Why don’t you mention Africa? Is their population plummeting?) and questionable methodology, it does raise interesting questions on what happens if the population of the well-to-do nations plummet while the troubled nations rise exponentially. There was a long-ass thread here arguing about that, but even I wouldn’t force you to read that inanity.
[/ul]

[ul]
I assume that they are aware of the pros and cons so A./F.
[/ul]

[ul]
This is a pretty good question for the Washington DC area. Fairfax County [Virginia] Public Schools tend to publish their school announcements in four or five languages. The easy rant would be “Why don’t they just learn English like everybody else?” but how could you if you are working three jobs cleaning crap for minimum wage at night and trying to keep order at home. There I go generalizing again. But I also know multi-translations of signs can get expensive. As things are I’ll go with B. (Feels like “Millionaire” doesn’t it)
[/ul]

[ul]
Who cares? F.
[/ul]

[ul]Whenever you do start driving you’ll be inexperienced, I thing the biggest problem is that drivers education is generally crap. At the DMV you get about five hours of “on the road” experience. Kids my age do do stupid stuff but I have yet to find anyone who doesn’t drive like a moron. Also, just because you can’t vote doesn’t mean you’re helpless to the big-scary politicians. I think we’re blaming the wrong folks on this. E.
[/ul]

[ul]
E. but with a caveat (suprise, suprise!) This will be difficult for me to explain, but here goes. . . Many of these countries are dirt poor. I mean poor where when asked “What’s for dinner?” the answer is dirt. These kids are working for piss-poor wages because otherwise they can’t afford the dirt. Who’s to blame for that. Where a lot of people, but the only one I can affect is the company. But the only way I can do that is to drive it out of business. And cause little Pedro the loss of his job, probably making him worse off in the short run now. E is probably the worse answer out there, but the only one I can follow.
[/ul]
7. What do you think of corporal punishment?
a. It’s perfect. Physical pain tells all.
b. If it’s a young child who hits people and does other bad stuff, it’s good.
c. I don’t know.
d. It’s wrong and humiliating. It causes more problems than it solves.
e. It can destroy parent/child relationships. That child won’t remember or care why he got hit. All he cares about is “You hurt me!”
f. Indifferent.

[ul]
Give your thanks to Drain above. She gave the answer I agree with totally, so I don’t have to write a mini-essay like the one for the answer above. (Which I’m not satisfied with, but I can’t think of a way to articulate my dilemma clearly.)
[/ul]

[ul]
Probably a humble B.
[/ul]

[ul]
Congratulations! You’ve perfectly describe Fairfax County. We now have the sixth worse pollution in our area. In places I feel like I’m living in a desert. The Great Asphalt Plains. I also have a name for the Kingstowne area of the county, “The Fairfax County Badlands”! E.
[/ul]

[ul]
Short answer D. Long answer has been articulated nicely here by John Zipperer whom links to this interesting opinion.
[/ul]
11. A group of vegetarian activists is protesting in front of a meat shop. This makes you think about vegetarians and their cause. What are those thoughts?
a. Good point. Don’t eat meat. Why kill innocent animals when we can live off plants?

[ul]
I remember this funny line in Futurama between Leela and a group of hippies.
Leela: “Animals eat meat”
Hippie: “Nuh Uh, we taught a lion to eat tofu!”
And out came this pathetic, sickly looking creature.
We’re omnivores. We eat both plant and animals for sustinence. Anyway, I don’t care what you eat, so you shouldn’t care about my diet. That is between me and my doctor. C.-D.
[/ul]

I’ll probably get to the rest of this list later, because I already spent about an hour on this. Anyway I want to go and see MI2.

[ul]
That’s why I’ve stopped looking at Redbook magazine. Nothing in it interests me. I wish they stock animation or science magazines in stores. F.

[ul]
Another school shooting. That’s interesting. I don’t remember all of those inner-city gang/drug wars that would sometimes spill over into the schools making it to the consciousness of the general public outside the city limits. Ironically my former high-school is probably safer now than it was ten years ago. However I’m not too sure about Detroit’s public school system.
But remember, when you don’t have a solution just blame the parents. I’ll pick the safe D.
[/ul]
Friendship is priceless.
e. No! No amount of money can make me squeal on my friends so those law officials can f
k off!
f. Indifferent.**
[ul]
I’m not going to rag on you for this, because this may very well be the type of survey they give out in a high school/college sociology type class. Or maybe the final exam of the “Bill Bennett I’m Better than You Book of Morality.” My answer to this question would be dependent on factors independent of this question. Most of my friends, while quirky on off-beat, are the law-abiding type. Though a few I can imagine probably have broken several laws already. You can cross off “A.” and “C.” because I do value my friend highly. And no matter how honorable I think I am, I don’t think I’d ever make a stand for “E.” except in the rarest of cases (such as a law that was broken was racist, sexist, unfair by design.) As such it depends on circumstances. My answer would be that my friends rely on me and friendship is priceless, but my friends shouldn’t be breaking the law. But it depends on the situation and therefore I’m unable to answer. And that you can find on page 78.

15. A classic Warner Bros. cartoon is being banned because its content is a little unsuitable for a general audience. How do you feel?
a. Great! Remove the bad stuff and keep the good!

[ul]
also 2sense asked, and I now

Most of the cartoon shorts that air on TV were made in the 30s, 40s and 50s. Well a lot of them are shall we say “Politically Incorrect.” Do you remember Speedy Gonzales “the fastest mouse in all of meh-HE-ko.” Well some of the slower among us may think that Speedy and his amigo Slow-Poke Rodriguez are representative of all the folks south of the Tex-Mex border. That they are lazy people in a sleepy country who siesta all day and wear big hats. So as far as I can tell, they don’t air on the Cartoon Network anymore. This also goes for the big eleven which follows (I hope all links work):
[li]“Hittin’ the Trail to Hallelujah Land”[/li][li]“Sunday Go to Meetin’ Time”[/li][li]“Clean Pastures”[/li][li]“Uncle Tom’s Bungalow”[/li][li]“Jungle Jitters”[/li][li]“The Isle of Pingo Pongo”[/li][li]“All This and Rabbit Stew” (which I have on tape)[/li][li]“Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarves” (which I’ve seen and probably the worse (un-PC) joke was “Murder Inc./Price: $1/Midgets Half-Price/Japs FREE.” Except for the stylized caricatures [giant lips, extremely dark-skinned] I missed most of the race jokes. But then again, you can’t offend me easily. I went to public school.[/li][li]“Tin Pan Alley Cats”[/li][li]“Angel Puss”[/li][li]“Goldilocks and the Jivin’ Bears”[/li]They all feature stereotypical 30s/40s portrayals of blacks. Due to those issues they have been “banned” much the same way Disney’s “Song of the South” has been. Also many other cartoons have had some jokes cut; a few have had scenes reanimated. This applies to all the studios that made cartoons. I’m sure this is incomplete and someone will correct me on this information.
Now I’m going to answer and it will be biased (as I am an animation buff). I wish to see these films. Cartoon Network is very schizophrenic as a network, (Is it a bastion for kids? Old timer nostalgia?..though less of that now since “Boomerang” exists now. General entertainment? The new home for anime?..“Gundam Wing” and “Tenchi Muyo”) but it can do some “Bravo” and “A&E” style shows and talk about the depiction of race in this form of popular entertainment. Why have a show like “Toonheads” and ignore a basic question like this? Now for my long-awaited answer, it’s a qualified D. But I bet many of you are asking “What’s the question again?”!
[/ul]

[ul]
I’ve never ran into anyone who was critical of a one-child family. Usually the criticisms come after you have about 6 and still want more. Anyway, why would I criticize either. A. bordering on F.

[ul]
It’s symbolism mostly. I will answer A..
[/ul]

[ul]
I don’t have an answer so Where are the parents?. This is tough. The internet is not a nanny, but if a child is clever enough, he can circumvent any net-monitoring software. I know I have! Of course I really, really don’t want to answer the question “What’s that horse doing to that girl?” I say when you’re away, lock all the children outside and have them play. No internet without mommy and daddy. B.
[/ul]

Or maybe she’s just not good at math. D.

I think I’ll have to leave that for Montel Williams. Sorry.
