When A Dog Gets Into Your Coke (Don't Need Answer Fast)

This article says the police drug-sniffing dog Koda inhaled “some” cocaine during a traffic stop. He was treated at a vet clinic and back to work the next day.

Any veterinarians or druggies here ever observed a dog under the influence of blow? How do they act?

Followup question: how does one treat a dog that’s ingested cocaine?

At any rate, I’d imagine the dog would respond as any mammal would to the stimulant: elevated heart rate, increased movement, etc., and the amount of the response would be dependent on amount vs. relative body mass.

Dig lots of holes, tidy up the doghouse.

And here I thought this was a thread about the hygienic aspects of having a dog lap up some of your soda (like Mark Harmon and his dog with the peanut butter in the movie Summer School).

Silly me.

Well it becomes nearly impossible to keep them out of the evidence room…

Interesting question, particularly seeing as how they have to have smelled it before as part of their training.

Yeah, I was going to chime in with my dog finishing off my wife’s eggnog last year, and kind of wobbling around for the rest of the evening. She got my dog drunk!

Many years ago my first ex-husband thought it would be a cool idea to give our extremely exuberant young Rottweiler a megadose of weed (mixed into hamburger meat) to calm him down. I came home from work and my poor pup was so woozy and lethargic, I decided to take him to the veterinary ER. At that point the stupid ex told me what he had done.

I went ballistic, dog was fine without veterinary intervention by morning.

Sorry, not coke, but relevant so I thought I would share.

I had a dog accidentally ingest a large amount of theobromine once. She was a large dog, so she survived it, but she was running around the apartment, as my husband said “like she’d done a line of coke.” I called the vet and asked if we needed to induce vomiting, and if it was OK to take her out for exercise. The vet said if she was already hyper, inducing vomiting was pointless, and since she has eaten milk chocolate, and weighed 80lbs, she would probably be OK, but she needed to come in if she had any of a list of symptoms, one of which was a seizure. He said to give her as much food as she’d eat, even if we had to get her some canned food to tempt her, and to make sure she had plenty of water.

She was young, so I took her for a jog while I was on my bike, after giving her some food mixed with canned tuna (catfood), and lots of water. When we got back, she drank about about a half gallon of water, and passed out. We knew she was OK, because she was snoring loudly, and occasionally doing the “dog dreaming” (kicking her feet). She was out for a couple of hours.

She’d stolen the chocolate off the kitchen counter, and she was normally a pretty well behaved dog, who didn’t steal food off the counter. I don’t know what tempted her on this particular occasion-- or if possibly a cat knocked it onto the floor. Anyway, she never did anything like that again, so I don’t think she felt to well after eating it.

The amount needed to smell it isn’t anywhere near what you need to have a reaction.

Think about when you smell marijuana - you can smell it in hallways of hotels - but you aren’t getting high.

Cocaine is similar to other stimulants - if you put your face in it and inhale - enough to get powder in your mucous membranes - you will have a reaction - that depending on the dose - could be serious. I’d expect they’d act like people - of course not all drugs are cross species - I don’t think most people react to catnip for instance - but I’ve never rolled around in it.

I heard he got a small fine and diversion.
