When am I allowed to take my wedding ring off?

Good God I was never expecting a litany of horror stories when I opened this thread. Makes me think there are huge populations of 9-fingered folk out there with their own How-I-Lost-My-Digit stories. :shudder:

I only take mine off when I’m in the shower–our first apartment had an open drain and I was afraid it’d fall off. Our home (and drain) has changed since then but old habits and such.

And I should mention that in The Abyss, Ed Harris tosses his wedding ring in the toilet, only to reconsider and retrieve it–and soon afterward the ring saves his life! Does anyone know of someone whose life was saved (or something else dramatic-yet-positive) specifically because they we were wearing their wedding ring?

Ditto for me. Mr. Pundit called me just this morning and asked me to put his ring in a safe place because he was lifting weights last night and forgot to put it back on. I haven’t worn mine for days because yesterday I played tennis in the 90+ degree weather and today I was cleaning all day.

The way I look at it, a ring is a symbol of your commitment. That commitment is neither strengthened nor weakened by the presence or absence of that symbol.

I’d strongly suggest taking your ring off while playing. I play keeper too and it usually isn’t an issue. But on occasion the ball will hit just right and it will hurt like hell. I’ve had some bruising and swelling because of it so I always take it off.

Depending on the ring shape, it may also be a good idea to take it off at night before going to bed. If moisture can accumulate, then bacteria can grow, and you can get a “ring rash”.

This has caused me to wear my wedding ring “european style” on my right hand for a few days on a couple of occasions.
