when and why did women start shaving?

does anyone have info on this? I’ve tried to find some definitive info online about this and I couldn’t locate solid fact. Tons of old paintings show armpit hair, none really show leg hair. Were women less hairy in the past? Other than cultural differences, why do some cultures accept unshaven women more than others? And, do you find it unacceptable to see an unshaven woman? Or do you put up with it just attend Grateful Dead shows? LOL
I’m sorta baffled by this one. Doesn’t bother me.

Okay, okay. I know. Cecil has answered this one…sort of. I finally figured out how to search his articles, but as a guest, I can’t search these boards. Cecil’s article leaves us hanging though.
I’ve found, in my world travels (40+ countries), that shaving is more than a north american or british phenomenon. I’ve been to the beaches in greece, spent summers in Germany…shaving seems to be more the rule than the exception. When I get into this debate with my significant others, I’ve only ever gotten them to stop while the snow was on the ground and they weren’t gonna wear anything sleeveless anyway. They accept the fact that men and women in our society will frown upon the true female body. Very strange, IMHO.

Not all that long ago, in the US at least. I think it began in the 20’s, or after WW2.
That really narrows it down, huh?

thanks, oh great facetious one. I imbibe from the well of you devine witticisms, and in a fortnight, I shall be jocular, yet well-meaning.
