When animation goes wrong

Found this on another site - thought it was amusing enough to share with y’all.

Did you know there’s a game?

Hmmmm - played it for a few minutes but it wasn’t that good. Think I’ll stick to the videos.

I honestly wouldn’t put it past him, but he didn’t. Don Hertzfeldt is…very rabidly against commercials. Odd man, but does some fascinating stuff.

Those Pop Tart commercials aren’t him?

I went to The Animation Show (year 2) here in Detroit at the DIA a few years ago, Don Hertzfeldt was showing his The Meaning of Life and it was fantastic. He gave some Q&A at the end, and much to my embarrassment, the theatre was filled with idiots who didn’t comprehend what kind of work that took, or how seriously Don took his work. He was a very cool, laid back and sarcastic guy and he cracked me up with his responses (or non-responses) to some of the dumber questions like, “Do you know the guys at Jib Jab?”

He seems very anti-establishment, lives and works with very little money, and obviously has a taste for the disturbing. I think I’d like to have a few beers with him.

I wonder if he really submitted those commercials. To me the funniest thing was trying to imagine the reaction in the board room as they watched them.

When you work in animation, especially as a guy who loves animated short works, I think one might become embittered toward studios and corporations really fast, if you took your work seriously and personally enough, which Don certainly does.

Not sure if Don ever attempted commercial work, but if he has, I can see this as a big “fuck you” to the entire experience.
