The robins built it right near my front door last month. I saw adult birds, then adults with babies, and now it seems to be abandoned. Is it safe to assume they’re done? I’d like to pull it down and give it to a schoolteacher, but not if the birds are still using it.
If the babies flew away (and have been gone for more than a day or two), they’re done, at least IME that’s how it’s always been. Once the eggs hatch, it’s usually about two weeks while they’re learning to eat and fly before they’re gone for good, then I take it down.
Oh, and if you have kids, I found a few quick whistles will get the chicks to stick their heads up and open their mouths waiting for food. It’s kinda entertaining…actually, it’s kinda entertaining even if you don’t have kids.
Depends on the birds. Our balcony pigeons keep reusing the same nest seemingly forever. If it’s been a couple of weeks for your robins though, it’s probably safe to assume they’ve moved on.
if you see no activity then it’s empty.
a hand mirror while on a ladder can verify.
We have a pair of Mourning Doves who built a nest on a tree limb outside our rear room picture window. The view resembles an Ant Farm. Once everyone blows the coop, its done.
Do they re-use the same spot?
I had a pair of Mourning Doves try to build a nest on the cheapie 2-bulb bulb holder fixture by the patio door - one of the eggs fell through (their nests are NOT sturdy), so I put up a shelf with a low box stapled - it’s on it’s third crop. Still haven’t raised 2 healthy chicks to adulthood.
This last pair was looking good, but now one of the babies has returned and refuses to leave - if it is not eating it isn’t going to make it much further.
