When Calculating Slope...

When calculating slope which is the steeper slope the larger or smaller number? I got 0.49 and 0.87.

Remember, slope is rise/run. So bigger number = bigger rise (or smaller run) = steeper slope.

Unless of course if both numbers are negative. Then the steeper slope is the smaller number. Actually, the steeper slope is always the number with the larger absolute value.

If you ever get confused, just draw it. That’s how I got through calculus.

Eh? If rise is -10 and run is -1, then I get slope 10, and for -1, -1 I get 1, and the first is a lot steeper, no? Do you mean if one number is negative? Then I’ll agree a larger number means ‘more up’ but a larger magnitude number mean ‘more steep’

I think nivlac meant that if both slopes are negative.

:smack: Sorry. Still, the observation about steepness and upness is still valid.
