When celebrities' reputations jump the shark

Regarding William Shatner’s commercial appearances, he’s long had a philosophy of saying “yes” to almost every opportunity. I’d say his philosophy has served him well over his many years in the business.

How about Mayim Bialik’s ads for Neuriva? My opinion of her certainly went down (she also has some bad opinions, but those are less public)

Brian

Yeah, I’ve wondered that too. I’m pretty sure you’re referring not to gambling games but those ‘freemium’ games, like Royal Kingdom (which I think is the one Courtney Cox and Lisa Kudrow did a commercial for).

I’ve downloaded plenty of those ‘freemium’ games, including Royal Kingdom, play them while watching TV, and I’ve never paid a penny for extra stuff. I don’t know why anyone would-- it seems to me that if you paid $5 here and there for extras, where’s the challenge? What’s the point? It’s like cheating on Solitaire. Some of them do eventually get so difficult that they’re practically unplayable without help, but I’ve gotten very far in those games without paying for extra stuff.

That’s my assumption, too.

Royal Kingdom and its sister game, Royal Match, have had ads with those two, plus Jimmy Fallon, Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco, LeBron James, Sofia Vergara, etc. I’ve also seen ads for the Monopoly Go mobile game with Jason Momoa, Chris Pratt, and Keke Palmer.

It looks like those game companies must make money hand over fist, because they allegedly pay the celebrities seven figures for those appearances. AIUI, the games are technically “free,” but make their money through micro-transaction purchases of power-ups and bonuses, and they are apparently barely playable without making those purchases.

It didn’t cause his reputation too much damage but Wilford Brimley is (or was) mainly known on the internets for his diabetes products commercials.

Like I said though, they’re not barely playable without the extras, at least not for a long time. I’ve downloaded dozens of ‘freemium’ games over the years, and never paid a penny for extra power-ups and that sort of stuff. And I don’t think I’m all that great of a player. Royal Kingdom, for example, did get to a point where I could not get past a certain level so I just gave it up and deleted it. But that wasn’t until I had done hundreds of levels (each level only lasts a couple minutes). I guess a lot of people do pay, but they will not ever get dime one from me.

Discussion of these games are probably better in another thread.

That is actually the best method.

The “Mark And Brian” radio show used to play the same outtakes.

Yeah, but who will touch him after the “William Shat” debacle?

Philip Michael Thomas (“You might remember me from Miami Vice”) also plugged a psychic hotline a while back.

After his Oscar-worthy performance in “The Wizard Of Speed And Time” this must have totally crashed his career.

Yes, it certainly must have.

I think it’s funny that Ice-T has one of the most famous anti-police songs (Cop Killer) and has one of the longest careers playing a policeman (Law and Order SVU).

A stupid commercial does not a debacle make, or is there more to it than that?

And he’s been appearing, for a while now, in ads for a company which sells extended warranties for cars.

This is bizarre. Yesterday the original short “The Wizard of Space and Time” popped up in my algorithm seemingly out of nowhere. Now I know why.

For those not in the know, it was originally a video short made by a special effects guy. It went viral in a pre-internet way. It was later made into a really bad movie. A pre-Miami Vice PMT had a small role in the movie.

Speaking of Philip Michael Thomas and Oscars-he is the one who coined the term “EGOT” (for someone who has won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award.) He mentioned it in an interview in 1984 and claimed he would achieve it five years.

At this date he has NOT even been nominated for ANY of those awards.

Not mentioned yet, because I think none of them are too egregious, but Walton Goggins has been in everything lately including, I’ve noticed, a ton of commercials for all kinds of stuff.

I don’t think it’s happened yet, but one of these days he’s going to pop up on my TV talking about his intestinal lining or something and that’s it. You know his hot streak is over.

Yeah i was wondering if he owes tax money or alimony or something, the number he’s been in.
