When did instant oatmeal change?

I follow onlyporridge on imgur. He posts a picture of his breakfast every day, and he only eats porridge for breakfast.

ETA: you aren’t onlyporridge by any chance, are you?

I’m just not seeing a difference between today’s instant oatmeal compared to the instant oatmeal we had as kids.

Inspired by this thread, I made a bowl of Quaker Oats Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal this morning using the newfangled microwave technique—and it turned out just as I remembered.

If you’re hell bent on using instant packets, here’s what I do

  • slightly less liquid than the recipe calls for. i use 1/2 milk and 1/2 water
  • cook 1/2 the time recommended, stir, then remaining time
  • oatmeal will be fairly thick, so add liquid to taste when it’s done cooking.

YMMV but I like it this way

Don’t get me started on Pyrex not being like it used to.

I noticed that Quaker has changed the look of their instant oatmeal boxes - but what i wasn’t ready for was a complete overhaul on the recipe - I have eaten Peaches and Cream for years and when i bought the new packaged product it was awful. Complete disaster to what i was used to. Left an disgusting aftertaste in my mouth for hours - If you want to try a different product name it something else and see how it does( i know we are in a “Health Kick” time) - don’t punish the people who are used to something for so long and expect us to go along with it - I will no longer buy this product until something changes.:smack::mad::dubious:

On the boiling over in the microwave problem that several people have noted: the solution I use is a very large bowl. Then when it bubbles up, it doesn’t make a mess. And I don’t have to keep an eye on the cooking process.

(I usually eat Coach Oats from Costco, not instant Quaker Oats, but the principle is the same.)
