How does this say they will never make fun of Democrates again?
Wouldn’t you have to demonstrate that they never satirize left-wing targets, and only right-wing ones, to justify your title?
Isn’t it extremely likely that simply clobber whoever is in power at the time? Perhaps anyone who read it during the Clinton years can confirm (or deny) this. I can’t imagine they left the Lewinski scandal alone!
I pretty much only read it during the Reagan/Bush I years, so it seemed kinda lefty to me, but again, they were likely just blasting who happened to be in office at the time.
I see no lack of “equal opportunity satire,” seeing how this is one joke in over fifty years of MAD.
That said, I stopped bothering with MAD once they switched to glossy, color paper, and even moreso when they started running ads. Bloody ads in MAD Magazine! What a big ol’ “fuck you” to William M. Gaines.
Boy, they’re really socking it to that Spiro Agnew guy. He must
work there or something.
A while back, MAD featured “ultra-concise summaries” of popular books. The article included James Carville’s “We’re Right, They’re Wrong” and Rush Limbaugh’s “See, I Was Right Again.”
Here’s how the Carville summary looked:
“Everything that’s good about this country can be attributed to Democrats. Everything that’s bad about this country can be attributed to Republicans. Government programs are what make this country great, but those evil, diabolical Republicans keep taking them away. [etc. etc.]”
Here’s how the Limbaugh summary looked:
“All liberals are idiots. The environment is in great shape, and humans are incapable of harming it. All liberals are idiots. Government programs other than the military are a useless waste of money. All liberals are idiots. The press is run by liberals. All liberals are idiots. [etc. etc.]”
Which one do you think was more fun for the MAD staffers to write?
