It depends. Condoleeza Rice and Susana Martinez are longshots but are attracting punter interest in early betting. One of them is also black, yet neither would be met with the derision you speak of. Know why?

Yes and no. Mistrust of others seems to be instinctive in humanity, and shows itself in behaviors such as mistreatment of captives, racism, xenophobia, and the like. Human cruelty does seem to have some instinctive element.
We are not entirely blank slates, upon which our cultural values are written. We have some innate characteristics. Some of these are among our most noble values. Others are wholly reprehensible. It takes a fair amount of work to raise a human – or a tribe – to a higher state of civilization.
Rice 1) would be met with derision, because of her a) race and b) her sex and c) her role in the Bush Admin; 2) has said countless times she doesn’t want it; and 3) is almost certainly lesbian, which also constitutes 1)d), and I don’t think the GOP is ready.
