I always thought the term “Nuts!” was meant to apply to the nuts that squirrels eat, implying squirrely, implying crazy. Such as the last statement you just made was crazy.
Learn something knew all of the time.
My mom used it fairly liberally in the 80s.
I use it occasionally. My son heard me a few years ago and sheepishly tried to explain that “hey mom, I’m sure you didn’t realize that means testicles.”
I’m still trying to figure out the line “You’re all full of ball” 
in “Supper’s Ready” by Genesis. Is that a known Britishism or did Genesis just make it up on the nonce?
I was born in 1980 and my parents have said it as far back as I can remember. Interestingly, I’ve only ever heard very few people use it in that way
