The putative city of Homer’s Illiad was famously found by Schliemann in 1871. But I’m curious when it became lost the first place. While I knew it was rebuilt after the Homeric period, I had sort of assumed it had been lost back during the Bronze Age Collapse.
But I’ve seen a couple references to the Romans and even the Byzantines being aware of the location. So I’m wondering when the last pre-modern* knowledge of the location died out. Presumably some time in the Byzantine era, but that covers 500-1453, so I was wondering if anyone had nailed it down any more closely than that.
*(I know several other people in the 19th century people had suggested the hill as the site of the city before Schliemann, but I’m looking for pre-1800).
