On the day after Christmas I left for a three week camping and backpacking trip through the southwest with some friends from Germany. On New Years Eve I was standing at a pay phone at a rest stop somewhere in the eastern Mojave, freezing my ass off, and feeding quarters into the damn thing so I could hear her voice. I think that’s when I knew.
Y’all are making me cry! I love sappy love stories!
My “epiphany” was about two months after we started dating. He asked if I wanted to go on vacation to his hometown Daytona Beach over the 4th of July. I agreed, it sounded like fun! On a romantic walk down the beach at night, he sang Sunshine on My Shoulders to me - off-key. It made me laugh and cry at the same time. I knew he was a keeper! I think he even mentioned marriage during that trip - but I stopped that talk right away! In October he proposed and I said yes.
We had been dating for a while. Huge snow storm - everything shut down. The place I worked shut down, as did hers. Even the buses weren’t running.
I hiked to her place thru the snow. About four miles. Took me over three hours. Sometime during the second hour, I asked myself, "Is it really worth it?’
And the answer “Yes, of course” seemed the most natural thing in the world.
That was twenty-eight years ago. She’s still there at the end of my snowstorms.
Last two significants became significant at the first glance.
Guess I’m both romantic and lucky since I’ve got the love-at-first-sight gene and they had the hey-I’m-really-glad-to-meetcha gene.
