When do Olympic athletes have to leave the Olympic Village?

The Winter Olympics are over, obviously, but there’s still athletes in Sochi; at least those who appeared for the closing ceremonies. How long can an Olympian stay behind in the Olympic Village before the place closes for good, and they’re forced to leave?

SOCHI, Russia - By the busload, the world’s athletes and visitors rolled toward Sochi’s airport and took off for home Monday, fresh from a Winter Games experience that many Russians pronounced a smashing success and that the Olympic movement’s chief enthusiastically labeled a victory for the region and the host nation. “Yes! We did it!” one Olympic volunteer exulted as she darted into the night.

After 17 days of global sport and spotlight, Sochi ended the spirited chants of “Ro-ssi-ya! Ro-ssi-ya!” and started cleaning up.

Paralympians start arriving this week. Most of Canada’s teams are currently training at various locations around Europe so they’re not dealing with an extended flight. They’ll have at least a week of training on the Olympic venues before competition starts March 7th.
