When I hear Java, the first thing I think of is...

I voted for a computer programming language.

Probably the computer language, but there is also a board game

I’m really surprised; I thought way more people would say “coffee”. I mean, I’m a programmer, and do a ton of work in Java and JavaScript, and even I think “coffee” first. In fact, even when I think of the language, I still have the “coffee” definition present in my mind. After all, the name, the logo, and even structural components of the language are explicit references to coffee.

I’m on the East Coast, but grew up in the Midwest, and I did and do see “Java” used all the time. Never as a spoken request for coffee (“I’d like a java, please”), but as a reference to it, constantly. There are roughly one million and eight cafes called “The Java Joint”, “Java Junction”, “Just Java”, “Jumpin’ Java”, “Jammin’ Java”, “Cafe Java”, and “Java Cafe”. I’d wager it’s the most common word in cafe and coffee company names, including “coffee”. I also found a line of “Monster” energy drinks called “Java Monster”, Twix “Java”, and coffee-colored makeup, clothing, and accessories with"Java" in the name. It seems like whenever someone wants to sell something coffee-related and not use the obvious word, they go with “Java”.

But you’re right, I’ve never heard someone actually use “Java” to refer to an actual cup of coffee. It’s a marketing thing.

I didn’t even know it was a language. Just that it was some computer something. I said coffee.

Ouch! I should have known that! Feel a bit dirty and also guilty for looking down on people who spell Wookiee with one “e”…

It was a close call, but I went “Indonesian island” first*. Computer thingy second, with coffee (as in, “a cup of java/joe”) a rather close third.

(*Maybe because I have a second cousin who lives there.)

I first thought of coffee, and I lived in Indonesia for a couple of years.

I voted Other.

I think of Al Hirt.

No, I’m not kidding.
mmm

I sense that we have similar tastes and memories.
