When I was a kid I used to like a show called Space 1999...

Come on! Side-burns, bushy eyebrows, and a Bela Lugosi widow’s peak? Who wouldn’t?

You had ten foot action figures?! You must’ve had to dig a really big hole in the park to be able to bury them!

I still have a plastic model kit of Eagle One that I put together. The four landing feet have all broken off, and there’s dried modeling glue showing in many places. Oh, and the formerly white plastic has turned yellow with age.

OH YEAH! Maya was sexy!

No question about that!

I did! Mind you, I was about 9 at the time.

Yeah, ice-cream sandwiches used to be a lot bigger, too.

I used to like Space 1999 as well … I remember nearly peeing myself at the episode with the “dragon” thing that roasted people alive <shudder>

And aren’t Martin Landau and Barbra Bain the parents of her off Buffy and Angel, you know the loopy vampire woman who Angelus sired, and she sired Spike … I’ll remember her name the instant I hit submit
Oh thank goodness for messing about with the font … Drusilla

You’re surpised that an actor who played Bela Lugosi fathered a vampire?

Yet me add my voice to the chorus of rent before you buy. I almost bought it, but I viewed some episodes from the library, and it has not aged well.

Incidentally, I read the other day that Gene Roddenberry initially asked Martin landau to play Spock.

One thing to remember about Space: 1999 - it had two 24-episode seasons, and they were, essentially, two different shows.

Season One was an ambitious, if flawed, attempt at science fantasy - Ok, the initial premise was fundamentally daft, but the show set out to be challenging, tackling cosmic concepts and high weirdness. At its best, it’s a wonderful trip - oddly enough, it works best when it’s introducing horror elements: Lobelia Underhill already mentioned the episode “Dragon’s Domain”, and there are a couple of others, including “The Restless Spirit”, which I think is one of the best original ghost stories ever to appear on the small screen.

However, Season One wasn’t to everyone’s taste … Season Two (which is the one with Catherine Schell as Maya) took out all the cosmic concepts, the weird stuff, and the spooky stuff. What was left, after they did that, was a nice, tame, mindless little space opera show, on about the same level as Lost in Space. Personally, I think this was a damn shame.

I was gonna say the only good thing about Space 1999 was Gabrielle Drake with a purple hairdo. Then I remembered that was UFO. So nothing good.

Even as a kid I though Space 1999 sucked.

Saw the “Star Trek” Futurama yesterday and the Eagle makes a three frame (well very short) appearance towards the end.

And here’s the pic
