So I replaced the dodgy drive and put it in an enclosure, formatted it to ntfs, then ran chkdsk*. It reported 38 bad clusters. Not sure if a cluster is different to a sector that the NAS reported.
*I actually did a bunch of things in between which explains the sudden jump from 2 to 38.

Oh I see. I was actually planning on taking it apart to see what makes it tick. I’m pretty sure by the time I am done with it, no one will be able get anything from it.

I have done this out of curiosity as well, typically you need a torx driver and don’t forget the screw hiding under the tamper proof sticker. The platters make interesting drink coasters, or shiny but very low volume wind chimes. The magnets from the stepper motor are very powerful, I have several on my fridge. My cat likes to bat around the spacers from the hub the platters mount on, these are light alloy rings that can be rolled, or spun on their rims for feline amusement.
You can use a propane torch to demagnetize the platters, which also can create some attractive oxidation patterns on them. I do not recommend trying to microwave them.
