So apparently there was an interview with Harry and Meghan and everything everybody said would happen when they got married did happen. Is anybody surprised by that?
Screw them. They’re a couple of wankers. Two rich kids get married and are shocked that they’re getting press that isn’t 100% adoration. Makes me wish for the continued good health of George, Charlotte, and Louis so that these perpetual victims don’t wind up on the throne.
On the other hand, quite a few people who had viewed Hitler/Nazis favorably prior to WWII changed their minds. I wonder how sympathetic Edward would have remained if the Germans had bombed England while he was on the throne? We’ll never know.
The complete lack of class on all sides here is genuinely appalling. No matter what the actual truth is - and like all such things I’m pretty sure it lies somewhere in the middle - airing out your family arguments in the media is fucking gross.
Meghan was not born rich. She earned whatever she had going into the marriage.
And @RickJay, what else are they supposed to do? No one from the palace stood up for them. Meghan was (and is?) constantly attacked and ridiculed for doing the same things that everyone siad, “oh, how cute,” about when Kate did the same things. The side-by-side comparisons of the headlines when Kate was holding her “baby bump” and when Meghan did was pretty damned indicting.
Think of it like driving on a highway. You are surrounded by other vehicles, roadside advertisements, scenery, your passengers etc etc, but you filter out 95% of it and just concentrate on what’s important.
She wasn’t a “professional victim” until she married into the Royal family and then got attacked for doing the same things that her sister-in-law did. Of course, her sister-in-law is (a) white, (b) British, (c ) not divorced, and (d) white.
I don’t know, @BobLibDem, how would you react when multiple newspapers print vile lies about you every single day and the family you married into does nothing to protect you from those attacks or help you emotionally and mentally? Think you might hit back, eventually? If they were attacking your wife, think you might decide that the family needs to get its head out of its collective ass or you’re out?
Early on, Kate was constantly attacked and ridiculed; she was “Waity Katie,” she was “low class,” she was faking her pregnancy, she didn’t fit in with the royals, she was a social climber, she didn’t know how to dress herself (and the comments about her family were even worse–see, e.g., some of the commentary about her mother’s alleged Jewish ancestry). Then the tabloid press found a new target, and Kate suddenly could do no wrong.
EVERY royal woman has had to deal with nasty press: the Queen, Margaret, Diana, Fergie, Sophie, Camilla, Kate, Meghan. Meghan had to deal with the extra burden of race, not just social class, but let’s not pretend that any of the others had it easy from the get-go either.
And what, exactly, was the palace supposed to do? Kate, through both the palace and her lawyers, for example, spent years trying to get the tabloids to back off, with very little success. She remained a target right up until the point the tabs scented fresh blood in the water. If it didn’t work for her, why do you believe that it would have worked with Meghan?
I thought it interesting that the Royal with whom Harry remains the closest, is Granny, Her Maj. And that he’s most estranged from his father.
Meghan chose her words very carefully when talking about Kate. There’s definitely an unhealed rift there.
It seems the bottom line is that Harry and Meghan are trying hard to avoid the mistakes that Chuck and Di made a generation ago, to protect her sanity. Of course it helps that he’s not cheating on her.
I would find it ironic if the man rumored to be the illegitimate son of the stable boy and a dim witted princess and his darkish skinned wife were the final straw that brought the House of Battenberg down. They are still entitled, spoilt brats, the both of them, but revenge is something I can understand.
I guess the only winner in this affair will be Oprah.
I’ve always more or less conceived of the Royal Family and the drama surrounding them as essentially the ur-Reality Show- the longest running one of them all, even before reality shows were a thing.
