When the Hell is this Fuckin' Interview Going to be Over?

They’re probably averagely dysfunctional like the rest of us. 99% of what is said about the entire shitshow is a drama script written by “journalists” to attract eyeballs.

Who is saying that? The UK media I assume? They’re pros (pro assholes but pros nonetheless). They just want to provoke a reaction. A reaction from you (check!) and ideally from Markle so they have more easy copy to file.

The only way to win is not to play.

No, the general assholic public. Including people in this very thread.

Well, they could, of course, move to a different country - the USA would be a good choice - and stop doing royal stuff. That was, in fact, a GREAT idea. I applaud them for it. Gutsy, smart move.

I honestly find that really silly. Again, it’s Donald Trump logic. God, the world is screwed up right now.

The correct play is always to do what will maximize your personal utility and that of your family. This wasn’t it.

They should’ve had a long engagement one which enabled Harry to extricate himself from his obligations.

Leading up to the huge wedding, Meghan was the planets most loved bride to be. Then she thought she could flip the monarchy on its ear and get on with playing princess on her own terms?

She could’ve slayed them by toughening up and rising above, outwitting the suits. She got bogged down in the petty gossip and let it bother her to the point of suicide? Fuck the tabloids by now I would’ve thought the Royals would not be so manipulated and cowed by their coverage. Meanwhile Hangdog Harry invited the love of his life to join his family knowing full well the royal protocols in place that would govern their lives.

Hugely disappointed in these two who promised to “ hit the ground running”.

Quoted for truth. Any other young woman of color whose in-laws treated her that way would have everyone on her side, and anyone who said “but she knew what they were like and married him anyway so she’s got no right to complain” would be vaporized. But just because it’s the royal family and she was a minor celebrity the disconnect we have between famous people and average people kicks in and she gets no sympathy.

What if it was an actress or athlete or the wife of a Fortune 500 tycoon or top military official? If she went on Oprah would she be trashed for talking about institutionalized abuse and her struggles to cope?

The one good part is that Harry stuck with her and supports her rather than following the family script.

Not if fighting is going to make your life worse.

Much of the problem is that the tabloids did NOT print that many outright lies. Most of their nasty coverage was either opinion (‘Meghan’s family is low-class,’ ‘it is vulgar to cradle your baby bump’) or true facts presented selectively or in a way as to make a poor impression. For example, even the much-derided and very vicious “(almost) straight out of Compton” story in the Daily Mail was mostly true: Meghan’s mother lived in Crenshaw, a neighborhood historically similar to Compton, and like Compton well-known as a hotspot of gang activity with a crime rate that is shocking by middle-class British standards, etc. We all know the story was intended as a hit job, intended to present Meghan as low-class at best, but it never actually came out and SAID that there was anything wrong with living in Crenshaw. It was a ‘wink, wink, nudge, nudge’: the actual text was rather matter-of-fact, and it was the subtext that was the problem. Complaining about subtexts and what is not said and what people read into an article is a dicey proposition, particularly when the press can fight back as well as the British tabs can.

This isn’t Thailand, where criticizing the monarch is a criminal act (lèse-majesté). In Britain, the freedom of the press is very well established, and trying to tell the press, even the gutter elements thereof, what opinions they can and cannot express is not a winning maneuver. I’m not really sure what steps people expected the Palace to take, but shutting down racism in the Daily Mail is the logical and practical equivalent of telling Fox News they have to be nice to the Democratic Party.

I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I sympathize with any fellow human being stressed out by life’s troubles. That stress can be real and can be, to some extent, debilitating. OTOH, my ability to sympathize is based on being sometimes stressed by life’s troubles myself. But, unlike these two, I’ve never had the ability to live a life of luxury wherever the fuck in the world I felt like without the least concern about ever working for a living, and to call up Oprah Winfrey to air my grievances to the entire world whenever I felt like it. There are people in this world with real troubles, like not having a decent place to live, or enough to eat.

She absolutely deserves sympathy for that. As does he, since it appears HE at least stuck up for her, which is why they said “we’re out” and moved to the States, which is the smartest thing a member of the royal family has done since Elizabeth herself chased her nazi-ass uncle out of the UK.

Fighting with the press, however, is a loser’s strategy.

“Never pick a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel.”

It’s from the newspaper days, but the sentiment is still true.

I really don’t have any idea of what happened in Harry/Meghan’s story, but the quote bears on RickJay’s basic premise

May I suggest you look for new quiet roads. I managed not to hear about this interview at all until a day or two ago, and this thread is the most I’ve read about it so far. I did see several news alerts yesterday – I’m not claiming I completely missed the media blitz. But it hasn’t risen to anything like a level deserving a pit thread in my life.

Add me to those who were surprised and a little disappointed this thread isn’t about some horrendous job interview that never really died. That sounded intriguing.

I pay little attention to the royals. Recently watched Suits - until we had, I was unaware Meghan was in it. After a couple of the more steamy scenes, my wife and I commented to each other that that was more skin and lingerie than we expected to see of a royal.

Doesn’t surprise me that the press went nuts over her. I do not know to what extent ANYONE could have maintained some sanity/equanimity in that sort of fishbowl.

Not having paid attention - what sort of course did they seek to steer? Did they jealously guard their privacy? Did they try to work with the press to feed them enough? Did they think they could live a very public life yet avoid close examination? I really do not know to what extent any of those would have been possible. But if I were marrying into a situation like that, you can be damned sure my spouse and I would have a plan.

Now that they are non-Royal, and living stateside, what lifestyle do they expect to lead? Do they intend to be celebrities? How wealthy do they expect to be? I imagine they COULD figure out ways to be pretty private. Buy a huge fenced compound in the middle of nowhere, with plenty of security and staff. But I imagine that may not be the lifestyle they desire.

What is “Suits?”

As I understand it, they’ve done the big compound thing already, using money Harry inherited from his mother. They plan to do charitable foundation stuff, and have signed (potentially very lucrative) deals with Netflix and Spotify. They’ll be OK.

Suits was a TV show on the USA Network (basic cable) from 2011 to 2019, about the doings at a fictional New York law firm. Meghan Markle appeared as the fourth lead (in the role of “Rachel Zane”) until 2017.

My wife insisted on watching it. For me it was two spoiled rich kids who have zero monetary worries for the rest of their lives, living on an estate in Santa Barbara, and talking to another billionaire. I don’t care about any of these people or their supposed trials and troubles.

Yeah, I didn’t think we needed to hold any tag sales for them.

Their deals w/ content providers seems somewhat at odds w/ their concerns over their privacy having been invaded.

Thread won.

They are certainly rich, but I don’t know enough about them to say they’re spoiled. Rich people have problems too, just not financial problems.
I watched the interview (also at the request of my wife) and while something about them rubbed my wife the wrong way, I wasn’t bothered by what they said (or that they said it). I do wonder what they were trying to accomplish.

On the positive side Piers Morgan stormed off his UK morning TV show after being called out by a co presented for all the shit he had been giving Meghan over the last few years, so the UK is spared having to see or hear him. Unfortunately that means he might try and head back to this side of the pond.
If you have not heard of Piers Morgan you have a blessed life, don’t look him up.
