When were the first 'Swiss Army knives'

G’day

When were folding pocket knives that include special blades amounting to assorted tools first produced? I know that Victorinox delivered the first actual ‘Swiss Army knives’ to the Swiss Army in October 1891, but were they the first of the kind? And did they make none before getting the Swiss Army contract?

Was anything of the kind available in June 1889?

I’m pretty certain that what we know today as the multi-tasking blades of a Swiss Army Knife were not much known before 1930 or so, when they say they first used the “Victorinox” name for knives. In their trademark application from 1954, they mentioned quite a few types of knives, but nothing quite like the classic one.

There was a bit on the history channel that went into the whole history and development of the swiss army knife. It was most informative so try and catch it if you can.

I don’t think that’s right. The ‘Officer’s Knife’ of 1896 certainly had six blades.
