This just tickled me pink, thinking of someone doing the math for this. I’m not sure of the source of this joke.
When will Iran win the World Cup?
Brazil last won the world cup in 1994.
Before that they won it in 1970.
Add 1970 and 1994, it equals 3964.
Argentina last won the world cup in 1986.
Before that they won it in 1978.
Add 1978 and 1986, it equals 3964.
Germany last won in 1990.
Before that they won in 1974.
Add 1990 and 1974, it equals 3964.
So going by this logic, the winner of the 2002 world cup is the same
as the 3964 - 2002 = 1962 world cup. The 1962 world cup was won by
Brazil.
Iranian fans too have reason to rejoice :
Iran has never won the world cup so we’ll probably win it in the year 3964.
Which, of course, explains how France, not England, won in '98.
Stupid statistics
This was done four years ago in a better way. It is simply based on the symmetry of winners since 1970:
70 Brazil
74 Germany
78 Argentina
82 Italy (and now we start to count back)
86 Argentina
90 Germany
94 Brazil
So England (66) will win in 98 was the statement before kick-off.
Note that this method is better, since at that point you could not fight the ‘logic’: earlier champions could well match that pattern from 2002 onward. On the other hand the adding of years done in the OP falls through on many other examples as well.
Yes, it was meant to be a joke. Sorry if it didn’t come across like that. I know the logic is faulty.
Forget Iran, let’s go Montserrat! I think the only nations ranked lower by FIFA are Sealand and the Vatican.
